Can a high jack be used as a suitable floor jack substitute?

Also, where is the best jack point for lifting both front and rear tires (on the same side) on a '96 eighty for tire rotation?

For something as important as jacking up a truck, I wouldn't wait for a coupon, just grab the 20% coupon somewhere for HF. Big boy steel 3-4 ton and a set of 3 ton jack stands. This should run you around $100+tax.

IMO a floor jack is move convenient to use in a garage. Regardless of which one you go with properly sized jack stands are a must. I wouldn't get under a rig with either jack without stands.

I have used a Hi Lift a fair number of times for various things and they still make me a little nervous. Maybe thats because I let one hit me on the side of the head once.

Now that I think about it, is there anywhere on a stock 80 series to lift it with a high-lift without damaging something?

The wheel (obviously useless for a tire rotation):

Still, I wouldn't use it for garage wrenching.

^^ yes, you can jack by the trailer hitch if you have one. And you can do a wheel lift if you have a jack stand.

I'd rather use the stock emergency bottle jack for tire rotations instead of a Hi-Lift. This would only work if you're doing a five tire rotation using the spare.

Procedure would be to loosen all lugnuts 1/4 turn while vehicle is on the ground.

Drop spare to ground.

Swap spare to L/R and then put the LR on the LF. Put LF on the RR. (cross rotate). Put RR on RF. Put RF into spare spot.

Agree with others - not as a suitable floor jack subsitute.

Except for the wheel as shown in post #8, no.

I picked up a bumper lift adapter:

But I wouldn't use it on any bumper on current rigs. They're just not as stout as they used to be. I just keep it to make my Hi-Lift more versatile.

There is no real place to jack up a stock 80 with a Hi lift

I have done a few things with a high lift

But, I much prefer a good bottle jack or floor jack

You cant really do a tire rotation with out jack stands

You could use 2 jacks one under each axle on that side but still not too safe

I use a 3 ton Torin low profile jack from wally world that was $100 for the last 2 years hasn't had an issue yet.

I have 8 jack stands and two floor jacks, along with a few bottle jacks and screw jacks, 4X4 cribbing, etc. Most of this hardware has been accumulated at wrecking yards, pawn shops and garage sales. Costco used to sell a pretty good floor jack, and still might. I have a high lift which stays in the rig, and wouldn't use it in my garage except if I ran into something that it made sense to do so.

When I do a tire rotation I use two floor jacks, one on each axle (outboard of centerline) and do one side, then drop them, run around the other side and repeat. Takes a few minutes only.

We have a couple of these 4 Ton Heavy Duty Floor Jack with Rapid Pump® and some 6-ton jack stands that have worked great so far. Just used recently to put in the OME 2.5 lift kit.

One thing about a floor jack, its not just good for one of your rides, you can use a good one on any ride. Well worth the investment, imo.

All good advice guys.....pulled the trigger on the 3.5 ton NAPA floor jack today.
I know a bit of over kill but it is rock solid....

are the floor jacks tall enough for a 2-3 inch lift and 33inch tires?

Harbor Freight has decent floor jacks. Inexpensive, I paid 79 for a 4 ton Pittsburgh rapid pump.

Barely... you get into the 'high reach' floor jacks around this territory.

Don't ask me how I know :)
