Do you run the ARB compressor or just tap off your OBA system?

I use the ARB Mini Compressor with a custom HD air line I had made by Hydraulic Hose & Fittings on Rock. I am going to try to figure out a way to mount an OBA compressor, for tire inflation, tool operation, etc...when I do my 90K in a month or two (it doesn't look promising as there is virtually no engine room left for even a small engine driven compressor...but I'm still interested in figuring it out); but even if that is successful I will continue to power the locker with the ARB mini.

I'd be happy to help you...just say the word.

Not news to you...but you can always throw the compressor in later...although it is easier to connect the air-line at the time you are reinstalling the diff.

FYI: You surely have read about the spat of 100 front diff failures over in the 80vs100 thread. FYI: I ran my '99 without the ARB for over a year without incident (with sliders, front/rear bumpers, drawer setup...i.e. lots of extra weight/load). Most of the miles I drove were on varied surfaces including dirt, mud, rock, snow, ice with over 50% of my travels being off-road and on trails similar to what's between here and VC..with 33" MT/R's with the CDL and rear locker activated on many of those trails. I was aware of the weakness...and used the skinny pedal accordingly. However only you can calc the risk/reward equation as it relates to this ;) .

I was thinking CO2;) For the price of the ABR mini I could set the 100 up with a dual CO2 system, "air and a spare". That would cover the lockers and airing up tires.

The biggest problem I saw with any of the 12v compressors that have decent cfm output for inflating tires is the current draw (and $$$). However one compressor with a manifold and tank would be nice for all needs.

I did a lot of research on OBA when I was getting ready to build the 40. I couldn't do the York system so I went with CO2. If you have room for a mechanical pump that would be okay.

How would you drive a mechanical pump when using a serpentine belt?
Add a dual pully to one of the bolt on's?

I wouldn't drive the OBA with a serpentine on the 100. It looks like it would be relatively simple to install a v pulley between the fan and the crankshaft pulley (it would need to be custom machined...but relatively simple). I have my Warn solenoid mounted in the engine bay...but it appears upon my casual inspection/estimating the other compressor (sorry can't remember the name right now) which is more horizontal than vertical might fit into this space. The biggest issue, as I see it, is figuring out where to mount the bracket to hold the compressor on a 100...since it has dual overhead cams and the cover bolts for the timing chain aren't large enough/substantial enough)...but when I do the t-belt it will give me an opportunity to better size it up. There may also be enough room on the bottom to mount too...

I stated that badly. I was wondering how it would be done on an engine with a serpentine belt.

My first thought was to piggy back a pully on to the alternator or waterpump pully. That would be butt cheap to make, you could probably even do it your self.

That's a thought. Are serp belts available in short lengths?
 
Actually it's not the crankshaft pulley as I stated above...it's the fan/water pump where I initially thought about inserting the v-pulley.

The desire for OBD has become of more interest to me since going to 315/35" tires...I go through the 10# Powertank more often than with the 33"'s ;) . Plus thinking about that 2009 trip on another continent ;) increased my interest too

JK I agree if you plan to air down/up on an extended trip like that OBA is a good idea.

The beer is very good over there...Quilimine I think was one we drank...a nice crisp lager.

rusty...did you have any of the LCs between? You have the 40 and now a 100. Did you ever own a 60 or 80 or something?
