Yeah, I HAD to go someplace this morning, so I just pulled the cable out and threw it in the back of the truck. 75 miles later, I'll clean/lube it and try to get it back in there. Funny thing - my odometer didn't move at all.

Yeah, that'll happen...

Well I hosed it off with some Gunscrubber, wiped it down, and lubed it up with some Slip2000. So far, no ticked off bumble bees. We'll see what happens when it gets cold again.

I must say that jonheld's method of pulling the cable out was a LOT easier than jacking around with the instrument panel would have been!!! Took about 2 minutes to crawl under the truck and get the cable out, 5 minutes wiping and oiling, and about 3 minutes to reinstall.

Thanks again guys!

Wow. Thats something to remember on my '92. My parents had a '91, and some douche back mechanic insisted that you had to remove the dash to do that. Ended up snapping the cable off trying to find where it came up to the dash, had to replace it. Which "took" about 12 years.

What part of Texas are you in ashooter? I spent a few months down in Zapata a few years back. Crazy hot, and desolate. Well... except for all the oil and gas wells. :). Nice rig too. Love the steelies.

I'm waaaaaay out west. Between Judge Roy Bean country and Pancho Villa country, about 10-12 miles north of the Rio Grande.

Yep, she's kinda cantankerous sometimes, but I love her...

Ashooter are you near Sanderson by any chance?

Most of the time... give or take a few dozen miles. The "Sanderson Tire and Feed" sign gave me away, huh? :)

Just did my cable took about 5 minutes.Works great now.Two things; 1. Watch out for the small brass washer on the brass end, its easy to lose. 2. Mine had a hard clump of grease on the cable on one spot which im sure was rubbing the case and throwing off the balance. Mike

Just wondering, my wife has most of her Dads side of the family(Mcsparran)in the Sanderson area.

Wow! It blows me away how small the world is sometimes. I called in an order for some ammo from a company in Tennessee one time and the guy taking my call had grown up in a house in Sanderson in the 1970's that my mom bought in the late 1990's and was remodeling. In a county with a population of something like 1200 people, that kind of stuff is AMAZING to me!

Thanks for keeping this thread alive for a decade, just had the same issue this morning, and will fix it as described above. Nice!

Most likely. It was that way for my '77 FJ55!
Super fast reply. Thanks for the roadside assistance! I got the mad evil bumblebee sound behind the dash and my speedo jumped from 60mph to 110mph! Haha. Removed the speedo cable since I have 7 hours drive ahead of me. Will lube it once back home in Utah.

So, after fixing my leaky speed o by replacing the o ring on my 94, I have started to have somewhat similar noises that are audible from behind the dash and from the t case when the car is on the lift. From reading this thread, it looks like the mechanical cable to the dash was on the 3FE only, where my FZJ80 has an electronic connection. Two questions:
1. If the speedo is intact the source of the noise, would I still be hearing it behind the dash even though it’s an electrical connection?
2. Does anything look wrong with my sensor? Specifically when I pulled it out, that snap ring near the gear end just doesn’t look right, but it slid right out and slid right back in.

Also, from what I’ve read there doesn’t seem to be any kind of truck to reinstalling the sensor, but has anyone ever run into trouble when they put their sensor back in? Any specific way the gear needs to be lined up?

Nope. I put a bit of gear oil on the new O ring and slide it back into place.
