Arr, nice reading and it's great to finish with a happy ending!:D

Good to hear it's running!

...

Still don't know what caused the pipes to get hot like that last time. But I really feel the head bolts were hydrolocked, and the head wasn't on well, cause everything was put back together exactly the same as last time, and she runs.

The evidence (nasty black junk was on everything. Looked like carbon) points to incomplete combustion. It probably was pulling oil, coolant into the cylinders past the leaking gasket and sending raw hydrocarbons out, that burned in the manifold. Logic would say that the same blow torch that made the manifold glow, would blow out past the gasket, toasting it, as each cylinder fired? Maybe the slime of coolant, etc protected it, who knows? It’s running, appears to have suffered no damage, so just keep a close eye on it and hopefully it will prove to be reliable.

Thanks for the support. I yelled when she fired up, and probably pissed off the neighbor who's room is right next to the rig I've been sitting in for a week!

I'm not sure of the blow torch. I know it sounded really crappy when it was turning over. I turned the dizzy just a few degrees, thinking my timing was off, and got a slight rev out of it, like it was firing on just a couple of cylinders.

That's when my dad noticed the glowing. Could it have been all the raw fuel like you said finally getting fired up?

At any rate, the gasket looked like new, and I don't think I fried any O2 sensors. I'll see what the hot compression test looks like in a few days.

eddie, way to go!:bounce:
glad to hear the rig is back on her feet.
soooo does this mean we are still on for guadelupe?

Scott,

I think we should do it! I'm still getting the broken sensors fixed and cleaning the coolant system for a trip to Colorado next week, then school starts. I think we were looking at a weekend in September, right?

Man I must say I have been following this thread and am thrilled at the outcome. When I first read it I had that sick sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach. I'm not sure that this is a job I would undertake on my own and after reading this thread I was almost positive it was something I wouldn't do myself. However the recovery gives hope. Just glad mine doesn't need it right at the moment.

Again and as others have already said nice recovery sir.

Coming out to go wheeling? :D

I'll be in the Colorado Springs area for a week, Aug 4 or 5 to 11 or 12. PM'd Romer about maybe sitting in on your monthly meeting, but won't be there till after that, BUT, looks like I'll make the rally! After my daughters see all the cruisers, I know they'll be hooked!

Thanks! I did my hot compression test today, and got 170, 170, 167, 165, 172, 172. I was really happy about it, and now I'd do it again if needed. After I had problems the first time, I was about to trailer it 600 miles to Slee's!
