I'm trying to pull the power steering pump out of my '87 diesel, but am having trouble. I loosed the belt adjuster but the belt is still tight. Looking at the FSM I need to loosen the pivot nut, but I can't find the pivot nut.

Also, do I need to remove the pulley or can I pull the pump with pulley still attached? Any help would be much appreciated!

Just cut the belt and replace it later.. remove the entire idler mechanism and inspect, clean, paint, replace. The bearing is often shot in the idler. I dont recall having to remove the pulley when I last pulled one.

Great suggestion. I just ordered a new idler bearing.

The belt is only two years old so I don't want to cut it if I don't have to! I guess I will just try unbolting everything and eventually it will come loose.

Okay I cut the belt and got all the mounting bolts loose. But the pump is still stuck in there because I cannot for the life of me find the pivot nut. I spent a couple hours climbing under the car, looking at the manual and climbing under the car again.

If you could tell me where the nut is located I would be very appreciative! I've removed or loosened all three of the bolts labeled "400" in the diagram.

Its integrated into the right hand side engine mount.

note the little mounting tab, bottom left mount - appreicating that the mount is not orientated in the correct plane in this photo..

Thank you!! I did already find that one and removed it.

Is it possible I just need to pry on the pump a bit because it's seized into place?

yes, give the pump a good rock back and forth.. it'll be crusted on.

The bolt that you highlighted in red is not necessary to remove to pull the pump.. that bolt will come out with the idler assembly.

is it three bolts total? one on the back of the pump (that attached to the engine mount), one on the front for pump and idler, and another on the front for just the idler? like in the FSM diagram

Hope all is well in F’ing Sumavul! Used to live there back in the late 80’s. Can you take some pictures of what you have so we can give you some more accurate guidance?

Cheers, James

I'm embarrassed but the idler pulley was so covered in grease I didn't see there was a snap ring on the bearing. I pressed it out with the snap ring in place and broke the retaining lip for the snap ring.

So now I'm searching for a replacement idler pulley discontinued part number 16630-47020

what a learning experience

One lesson these rigs are still trying to teach me is patience and if something is fighting me, look at it from a different perspective, take a walk, whatever, but don’t fight back. They are steel and will win.

Be the leaf in the stream, not the rock.

Amen. A lesson I re-learn at least once a year.

Wish I had learned that lesson today on a part that wasn't discontinued unobtanium

Cruiserparts is pulling an idler assembly off a 2H truck for me, replacing the bearing, and updating the belt tension mechanism to a newer design.

$220 which stings a bit but I'm thrilled to have found the part

The replacement idler pulley arrived but it doesn't fit. The pulley itself is the same size, but the tension mechanism is different. Any thoughts? Here's the old and "new" ones

The old one, everything lines up nicely

the new one that doesn't fit as you can see
