Help! Oil pan removal

For those who will do this in the future and the pan doesn't come off, I want to say that there is a hole in the block driver side towards the rear of pan. The lip of the pan is a bit exposed and a long rod can be inserted from above to hit it a couple times and pry it loose. The jack did nothing for me. Only that worked. Anyway, does anyone know what to use to remove the darn old gasket off the block? That is now my biggest problem.

I have a razor blade scraper that I use to take the stickers off my windshield, and I used that. Worked pretty well. Then I used dental pick type tools to get the tiny bits off all the nooks and crannies.

As a side note, when I did the side cover gasket and I had to get the cork gasket off the block, I used a heat gun, like for scraping paint etc, and it worked great in softening the gasket just enough to make it easier to scrape off.

Look, this is a PIA job. Cleanliness and thoroughness is mandatory the first time, so it doesn't leak when you put it back on.

Good luck.

Thanks for the input. The only thing that works for me so far is a mallet and a chisel looks like it. The darn gasket is petrified in place. I sprayed some carb cleaner but ultimately II think the chisel is what will work

Try the heat gun approach! it works!

Unfortunately I do not have a heat gun, however I couldn't just give up that easily. I just finished scraping the gasket off. I only need to wire brush the surfaces a bit. For the record I must say, what a pain in the ass. The frickin' cork was cemented to the block. I broke half my tools and picks while at it! By far the most difficult thing I had to do while working on m y cruiser. Oh, and I did it while on the ground laying on my back in my garage. So that didn't help much either. All I can say is I haven't been this dirty in a while. Ps, the size of the engine internals freaked me out. That crankshaft belongs in a locomotive. 2f's rule.

Hey NYNick, I just noticed your sig. I'm up in middletown. Maybe we get together and go do some power lines up in the cats sometime. Thanks for your help.

Hey Mongoose...I'm in!!!

I just joined GCLC, and their website is terrible. No calendar, no events, no communication..I don't get it. What did I send them $40 for?

BTW, I know the owner of the IHOP up there in Middletown!

Anyway, now you have to put that new gasket on...it's the alignment that'll get you!

Oooooo, discounted pancakes! Lol. The GCLC site does suck. I am not a member of anything anywhere yet. Don't really know what to join. I go wheel occasionally with a friend up in the northwestern cats on some power lines. I also run my 86pu in the backyard on my 6 acres. Lots of trees and I don't want to dent the cruiser. As far as the gasket goes, I think I will use the longer bolt procedure to line it up and I'll take it from there. Thanks for all your help. I will keep u informed about my next trip up in the Catskills.
