I am having AC put in my 1984 Fj60. It has the 2H motor in it. We are having an issue with the evaporator fitting. It did not have one in the truck when I bought it. I have bought one for an FJ60 and it measures 4"x11.4"x9.4" when my guy try's to install, the evaporator box isn't tall enough, and. Needs to go up another 3-4". did toyota have two different sized evaporators or boxes in the fj60?

I also have a 60 with a 2H. We installed AC from scratch, collecting all the parts needed to build the system. As far as my research on this subject went, there is only one size AC/evaporator box for the 60. (Maybe different for RHD). This is the evaporator you need:

And you evaporator box should look like this:

Thanks for sharing! I'm looking to do the same with my rig, do you happen to have your parts list handy?

I don’t have a parts list, but there is a write up of it somewhere in my 60 build thread. But if you are starting from scratch like me, then you will need an entire AC system. Best to get one from a wrecked 60, and just replace what’s needed.

you can grab some of the denso parts off rock auto related to the A/C system (last time I looked), but as noted above you will need to start looking in a salvage yard for parts. I would find a good donor (if possible) and take everything related to a/c, which is going to be fun but really the only way to get a good start, (includes the evaporator core ...etc). Open A/C systems sitting in the junkyard are not plug and play and run, who knows whats in there, and you always replace the dryer no mater what ...of course there are other precautions too.

Shouldn't there be an anti freeze thermistor on the outlet side of the evaporator? I'm getting ready to put AC in my 60. It has some sort of aftermarket system that doesn't work.
Thanks,

There is a thermistor (circled in red) on the evaporator box.

Thank you. Apparently I have an older design. It has a smaller evaporator, no expansion valve or low pressure sensor or thermistor inside the housing. It has the expansion valve in the engine compartment and no provision for low pressure sensor or thermistor. I think I am going to try to find a newer housing and upgrade the whole thing to the newer design. Pics of my unit below.
