Help me pick new front seats for my 80

So I got the price quote on new leathers for OEM manual seats, & they are basically the same price as a new pair of Moabs with the double locking sliders/mounts.

Considering that I would still have to find a set of manual seats for sale, and pay to have them shipped to me, getting a set of the Corbeaus may be the easier option. I'm gonna try and go to the Solo Performance Specialties warehouse nearby sometime in the next week to compare the Sport seat vs. the Moab, unless I can find a smoking deal on some manual seats before then.

I've had them just shy of a year now and and they've held up great - they still look and feel new...

Do you happen to have any pics of them installed? I'd be particularly interested in seeing them slid all the way back, and how they recline.

I also assume that you have to take the female seat belt receptacles off the stock seats, and they they mount to the Corbeau brackets?

Dumb question alert!!

Do aftermarket seats like Corbeau have similar suspension under your behind like the OEM seats do? The OEM seats have a fair amount of foam on top of springs/wires/whatever. Do aftermarket seats have similar springs/wires under their foam cushions?

Based on the description on Corbeau's website the Moab appears to be foam on frame, so NOT a suspension/spring type construction.

They do have suspension type seats, I have seen where some other mudders have used the Baja XP & Baja XRS seats.

I'll get you pictures Sunday and post to this thread. Anything else you want to see? Be forewarned: their tan is nothing like the Cruiser oak interior! I wonder if the spice might be a better match?

The seats recline flat - all that limits them is having the rear seats in place. And yes, you remove the buckle and bolt it on to the Corbeau bracket.

FYI the seats have multiple patterns drilled so you can move them a few inches to either side, or front and rear.

I'll happily look at anything you are willing to take pics of. My interior is gray, hopefully the cloth matches a little better, but not the end of the world if it's a few shades off. One of my hopes is that the lower seat height will make getting in and out of the truck a little easier, right now I have to hop up a bit to clear the seat, but also have to duck down at the same time to keep from smacking my head on the door frame. It would also be nice if there is a little room left for 2nd row passengers too, but again, not my first concern.

I am working on installing some volvo 850 seats now. I have been staring at them for a couple of months now and think I have finally found a way to get them installed but it will require removing the motorized base of the volvo seats, making a custom bracket and reusing the sliders from my cloth seats. It should actually be pretty simple if I can find a day with nice weather to get it done.

these are the seats I am working with, not too bad for $50:

You should definitely get some pics & do a write-up when you get those installed.

How closely do thode match the LC tan color? They almost look carmel?

Hey Joe! Did you get a chance to snap some pics of your Moabs?

I called my local Corbeau dealer, unfortunately they tend toward the street/race side of things rather than 4x4. He has a wide sport seat at his shop, but not the Moab, and I think he's the only Corbeau dealer in town. I'm going to try and get out to his shop on Saturday to check out the sport seat anyway. The guy I spoke with said he'd contact Corbeau to see if he can get a "scratch-n-dent" moab for cheap to have on hand, but I'm not holding my breath.

Joe, would you care to give me your comparison between the two seats?

Thanks again.

Has anyone looked into putting newer Lexus seats into an 80? Like the 570 seats or the smaller 470? Someone has to have one in the driveway to pull some measurements off...

Anyone?

I looked at it. The 100/470 seats look like they'll fit, but the issue (as with everything else) is that the brackets are totally wrong.

Brackets are going to be fabbed no matter what seats you put in beside the stockers...

So that aside what will fit... Some of those lex seats in leather heated and cooled can be had relatively cheep verse the aftermarket options...

So we need I've all height of seat, waist width, shoulder width and any clearance heights concerns under the seat

Update:

So I stopped into Solo Performance Specialties on Saturday, and while the store is technically closed on the weekends, the owner had given me his personal cell phone # so I could call him before coming out to be sure he was there. I checked out the wide Sport Seat he had on hand, it was really comfortable, and the reclining mechanism worked nice and smooth. I liked how the seats fold forward too, not that it's particularly necessary, but may come in handy anyhow.

The owner Dave told me that he had contacted Corbeau to order a Moab seat to have on hand, and that he should have it in about a week so that I can compare the two side-by-side. I am going to try to contact Corbeau directly to see if they can give me some dimensions on the double-locking sliders for the LC so I know what my overall seat bottom height will be when I compare the Moab and Sport Seats side-by-side.

My hat's off to Dave at SPS, he's been extremely helpful and given great service to a guy who hasn't even spent a dime at his business yet.

for some reason, I thought that the 100/470 seats are too wide on the driver side. I looked into this few years ago and I think that's what I concluded.

It could be, I didn't spend a ton of time looking at them.

So I went back out to SPS at lunch today & was able to rump-test both the Corbeau Wide Sport Seat, and the Moab side-by-side. I have to say that I actually liked the feel of the sport seat better, the seat bottom and seat back bolsters are a bit more prominent than the moab, but not as extreme as a Recaro style seat. I like that the Sport Seat has the adjustable headrest, rather than the one piece high-back of the Moab. I also felt that in general terms, the fit and finish of the Sport Seat seemed a notch above the Moab, specifically the recliner mechanism/handle and the seat-back hinge covers.

Judging by price alone, it makes sense that I would choose the sport seat, as it is of course the more expensive model. I mean, I did buy a Land Cruiser! :flipoff2:

Also, an update on an earlier question:
...Do aftermarket seats like Corbeau have similar suspension under your behind like the OEM seats do? The OEM seats have a fair amount of foam on top of springs/wires/whatever...

I didn't take the time to snap pictures, but the seat bottoms of both the Sport Seat and the Moab models have the "SSSSS" looking springs running across the bottom of the foam cushion. I can't say with certainty that this is the defining characteristic of a "suspension" seat, but it sure seems so, and it is what they have. Corbeau's webpage does not list either of these models under the "suspension" category, but that may only be because they do fit nicely into the "reclining" category.:meh:

The last decision I have to make is Vinyl or Cloth? I like the idea of the vinyl blending in better with the rest of the leather interior (gray) but am afraid of swamp-ass/swamp-back during steamy St. Louis summers. Anyone care to share their experiences with cloth vs. vinyl? I just got the LC in December, so I have not even experienced the rock-hard OEM leather in a STL summer yet.:hhmm:

I am in the same category as you - hate the swamp/ass/back syndrome. Consequently, all of my leather seats are covered with either cloth seat cover or sheep skin seat covers. I vote for cloth seats.
