Guys,

Going to paint my OEM wheels. I'm trying to decide what color to paint them and am being a bit indecisive so thought I'd look for some help!

I've got a '99 Riverock Mica. I would like to paint them some shade of grey/graphite/anthracite. My goal is to have them be decidedly not black, and not look like I tried to match the body color but failed. So definitely not black, definitely not riverock.

Anyone have any photos of their Riverrock Mica 100 with painted wheels? Let me know what you used!

Here's a 4R with duplicolor graphite wheels and the anthracite metallic body color:

I'll be removing all tires so that I can clean and scuff them and relocate all wheel weights to the back. Then spraying with a single stage paint, so availability in rattle can is not a concern. The sky is the limit in regards to color choice :)

I'm going to do a shade or two lighter than black on my riverrock when I get the time. Something that makes people go, "is that black?" "nah, too light" and then starts an argument. Because people love fighting over petty things like wheel color.

Both pics look great, but photos don't always convey a true depiction of color. Graphite is the solid safe choice, I'm leaning that way myself, but the anthracite is starting to win me over.

^^^^^ that looks good. But, out of the two you are considering I personally like the graphite color best. Either way it is going to look good again the color of your truck. Keep us posted.

Graphite.

Did some more searching and found this photo of Paul's truck which is the same color as mine. While the graphite looks really good, it is pretty close in color with the Riverock.

I'm thinking the Anthracite might be a bit more of a contrast with my body color and therefor look a lot better? Remember the goal is to not be black, and not look like a failed attempt to match the body color.

I think I do too, but you know what they say about a picture being worth 1000 words!

How are the emblems attached to the center cap?

From the factory, each emblem has three little plastic stubs that stick through holes in the center cap, then the ends of the stubs are melted to hold them on. To remove, you just use a knife or screw driver and clean off the melted parts on the back side of the center cap. Once you clean off the melted "stub" the emblem will pop off. Once painted and you want to reinstall the emblems, you just line them up to the holes and press them in, then flip the caps over and put a dab of epoxy or glue where the stubs stick through the holes.

dumb question, but I'll ask anyway, do you have to prep the wheels in any way before spraying them?

Sand, then spray primer, sand more, then spray a 2-3 coats of paint, then 2 coats of clear.

I am going to clean the wheels, sand any areas with 320 and 400 if needed, then use a red scuff pad. I'll be using single stage paint. Spraying 2 coats will likely be all it takes. Will have some extra to do touch-ups with a small brush if needed.

SS is quicker and easier than BC. Product itself is a bit pricier, but since application is easier it comes out roughly a wash.

You might need to do a bit more prep with chrome but I'm not sure. Just need to give the paint something to bite into.
