I drove home today and when I stopped the key would not turn from ACC to Lock to turn the vehicle off. I tried all the usual things like jigglying, spraying lube in there etc and nothing worked. As it was on ACC and would not go any further the vehicle is still on.
As I'm home and the key is on ACC I pulled the dash apart and pulled the cylinder and tried to turn the lock to off with a pair of pliers and THAT is stuck. The lock cylinder itself is perfect!
What is causing this?! This has to be something stupid as this is the first time this happened? I did a bunch of searching but can't find anything about that portion. Anyone help?

Well, I'm confused worse now. As soon as I unhooked the battery then it allowed me to turn the cylinder normally.
Can someone explain this?
What cursed, electrical dohickey, do I need to replace and sacrifice to the car gods.

Yea, 100% confirmed. If the battery is hooked up I cannot remove the key. If it is hooked up I can turn through all the modes and everything works fine. What locks the key into ACC so if the battery is connected you can insert the key, go to ACC, then ON and start the car and everything but then you cannot go fully back to LOCK to get the key out unless you unhook the battery?

What year/model 80 Series are you working on?

Post up some photos of what you have apart.

So if you disconnect the battery you can then turn the ignition key and it acts/feels normal ie; is there resistance as you turn the key as the key moves from ACC to ON to Start and the key springs back on it's own when you release it? OR, does the key feel too "free" and moves easily left and right without resistance?

And then if you hook up the battery, you cannot turn the key at all? Does the steering wheel unlock?

There is an electric interlock switch on ?most models that may be involved in what's happening but that wouldn't explain
you not being able to turn the key with the Steering Bracket removed?/

Read through this long thread, it goes over how the ignition cylinder/lock works and mostly discussed a broken ignition rod.

I had the happen last week. The key interlock solenoid that is the little black box under the key cylinder is what keeps the key from turning to off with the battery connected. There can be several causes that I was able to track down. The key interlock solenoid went bad, the shift inter lock solenoid which is under the shifter went bad, or the shift lock control computer went bad. You can do a temp fix, and disconnect the key interlock solenoid and the key will come out, but the truck will start in any gear if you do this. I replaced all three and was able to get them from part out folks on here and left my shift interlock solenoid disconnected until I receive the parts.

Confirmed Key Interlock Solenoid. Removed the two screws from the box on the bottom of the lock cylinder with part number 85432-60010 and everything works normally.
Just a little electronic pin that stabs out when the vehicle is not in park I guess? So, either this is hosed up or the shift control box. Starts and drives normally with this just dangling there so I ordered another but it looks like kind of a massive pain in the rear to change on a 97 as it's a whole assembly with the ignition as well. It might end up moving down on the list I suspect....

Upon getting this part and reassessing things I don't fully understand what the key lock solenoid actually does? Can anyone explain to me the purpose of this part of the assembly is even for other than simply preventing me from taking the key out of the ignition with the vehicle NOT in park?
I've driven the car now for 1,000 miles and I can't see any issues with it the way it is and honestly changing the assembly seems like a massive pain in the ass to the point where I'm more concerned with potentially making it worse. Should I just leave it alone and keep the part in a box?

Without the key interlock solenoid, the truck can be started in any gear. If the shifter is in reverse, you can start the car and it could lurch backwards.

Gotcha. I guess that is a reasonable safety item.
Perhaps I can unthread it from this harness somehow and install it without taking the entire car apart then....

No. That's why you have a neutral start switch. Starter will only crank in neutral and park.
