Help - drivetrain "ticking"

Pulled the left front wheel tonight, and the source of the ticking was apparent immediately. There are two pins that hold a metal spring plate, which I assume hold the pads in place. One of the pins had shed the wire that holds it in place, and had worked it's way out of the caliper, rubbing against the back of the wheel. Glad it was a easy (cheap) fix.

Has anybody else ever had this happen? The wire that goes in the end of the pin now seems pretty snug, but I'm afraid it's going to work loose again, so I will be replacing both sides next week.

glad to hear it is nothing serious. I have not heard of that happening. Has anyone touched your brakes lately? I would definitely replace the retaining wire on both sides.

The wire/clip that feeds into the holes in the two pins also has a bend in the middle of it that is supposed to set in a hole in the caliper. If the pin was put in backwards, there's nothing to keep it from flexing and popping out. That may be what happened. If it's in right, it shouldn't pop out.

Sounds like youre still due a birf repack, but since you've fixed the current problem, you've got the time to do the research, gear up and prepare to knock it out.

My "safety wire" (for lack of better term), was pretty worked over and barely stayed in the pins so I bought some new ones at the dealer. You can replace them with out even removing the wheel, just crawl under. The pins should be inserted from outboard to inboard, then the "safety wire" should be inserted, there is a hole on the caliper for the middle of the wire to slip into, which ensures the wire will not work it's way out of the pins.

Reminds me of a easy/fun practical joke -- Take a large heavy-duty zip tie and put it around someone's driveshaft. Makes a hell of a noise.

Sorry - I'm of no help whatsoever.
