Did I press the new real main seal in too far? I hope not.

Is it bad there's so much dirt/mud on the engine / transmission? / could that be a reason why the flexplate failed?

It's most likely stress cracks and metal fatigue.

Rear main seal went in too far. Removed it and ordering a new one to reinstall.

Used the wood-screw and wrench-pull method and it looks like the screw contacted the crank surface.

@vipergrhd @splitshot Does this look like something that needs resurfacing before installing new seal? Or is it fine to proceed with install? Please advise. I might hire a mechanic at this point.

You worry too much, even if the seal did go past the original spot it isn't going very far. I would just remove the nick from that since it's not a contact point for the seal make sure to clean the crank surface and apply a small amount of grease on the lip to ease the install. Use the old seal as a driver and tap it in slowly.

Clean the bolt holes and loctite them.

Thanks. I actually removed the seal but may have scratched the housing. Is this big enough to leak? If so, anything I should do to fix it

Finished the job. Very disappointing results.

After getting everything back together I turned the key to start the engine and it turned over a bit but just rattled and created smoke from the starter. I immediately turned the key off.

I think I may have installed the starter wrong but I dont know what exactly the issue is. It seemed bolted up ok but maybe the teeth did not line up, I don’t know.

It sounds like the starter is very weak having issues turning, it's not engaging and it just rattled and had a burning smell.

Any ideas what the problem is? Is it fixable or is everything destroyed?

Check battery voltage and all connections, I don't think it's possible to install starter the wrong way.

Yep you were right. It was a bad battery.
Got a brand new AGM battery and boom.. started right up.

Removed the starter and battery, brought to local O'Reilly auto parts. They tested both. Starters good. Battery was 100% charged but only put out 450 CCA instead of the proper 600, therefore it didn't have enough strength to fully turn over the engine.
