I have been a member of this board for quite a while, but have not posted and seeking advice. I became a member when my wife and I were shopping around for an SUV a couple of years ago. Well, we made the mistake of purchasing a Ford Expedition (POS) and the motor threw a rod at 47K. The truck exceeded the mileage warranty @36K, but the truck is only a 1-1/2 old. I should have gone with my gut feeling and bought a LC or Lx470 from the beginning and been done with it. Now I am having to eat up the cost of the Expedition and my wife wants nothing to do with it anymore.

So, that brings me to my current situation. I am in the process of looking at a 2003-2004 LC as well as the Lexus LX470. Aside from more luxury features, air suspension, and Lexus service, is there any thing that I would be missing between the two. Of course the Lexus comes at a higher premium. One of the main reasons I have considered the Lexus is due to the service accommodations. This will be my wife’s (family as well) traveling and commuting vehicle. So, if for any reason it will need to go in for service, we will need a loaner vehicle. This is very important because I cannot fit the family into my small car when necessary.

With this in mind, I would have to settle for an older Lexus compared to a newer LC for the difference in price. I am looking to spend around 30K for a vehicle that may have around 40-50K miles.

I have read the FAQ on purchasing a LC or Lexus. However, I would like some from feedback and advice on current market prices. Any input from knowledgeable forum members will be much appreciated.

Your not going to be buying a 2003 or newer LX with 40-50K miles for anything near $30K. You might find a 2003 LX with 60K miles in the $38-40K range and if you get it at a Lexus dealership you can ask for the certified pre owned warranty that will give you bumper to bumper coverage to 100K miles. Good luck with your search.

For a street truck, the Lexus is a better choice. Much better service at the dealer, and the hydraulic suspension (not air) is really nice to have, not to mention some of the other creature comforts of the LX.

Keep in mind the dealer does not give out loaner LX's, rather loaner ES's and RX's as well as rental cars.

I didn't think his price expectation was too far off. For a 2003 LC with 50-60K miles, ~$30K is fairly common from what I've been seeing. With a little luck, you could probably snag one with 50K miles for that much... at least that's what I've been seeing.

In Northern Virginia there are plenty of LC's around 30K range with mileage ranging from 40-60K. The LX470's are about 7-8K more with comparable mileage and age. I would attribute the lower prices to the number of these vehicles located int his part of the country. I was quite surprised when I started searching for a truck.

When I started looking a couple of years ago it was only at new ones which were around 64K with all of the options we were looking at. 3-4 years makes a huge diffrence now and 50-60K miles on these trucks is nothing if serviced regularly.

Thanks for all of the responses in the thread. I, like some of you have stated, should have doen this in the first place. I am taking a big hit on our truck and learning a big lesson the hard way by not buying a Toyota.

The suspension is air and steel (t-bar & coil). Air in this case is nitrogen, which is the main ingredient in normal air (78%). It's only the transfer of the suspension movement which is hydraulic, as well as hight adjustment and shock absorption (the famous "Skyhook").
It's the air and the adjustable suspension that makes it comfortable.

Your needs fit well with the LX470 and a CPO warranty (3 yr or 100K, plus roadside). While prices vary significantly, I found the prices between LC and LX overlap, though overall an equivalent LX was usually about $3K more than LC. This is in the south on southern 100s, not imported ones from the northern salted roads. For these types, you will likely need to drop to the 2002-03 models if you have $30K to spend. Either are outstanding models with minimal nagging problem issues.

Contact an internet sales person at a Lexus dealership (or more) and tell them what you are looking for. They will tip you off on prospective vehicles before they show up at the lot. I got to see and drive mine before make ready (for CPO). If you are willing to fly to get one and drive it home - you can really do some internet contacts. Members on this site have offered to check local units out so you don't waste a trip on junk (I have seen some abused 100s during my searches).

Even though the Lexus dealership does great on service, if you have a good Toyota dealer they can be a viable option for general maintenance work (or parts) at a reduced price. However, the loaner at Lexus is a great benefit for the difference in cost. My dealer uses RX, ES, and IS250 vehicles.
