I have an '88 pickup with a burned up heater blower resistor. With my VIN number, my parts sourcer(er) gives two options for a replacement resistor, one for a heavy duty system and one for a standard system. Anyone know how to tell which of these I have?

Interesting question. Didn't know there were differnt ones.

Looking out at ToyoDIY.com I see two listed. Looks like the first 4 to 5 characters and digits of your VIN # should tell you which one.

87138 RESISTOR, HEATER BLOWER
88635‑89103 LN56, 66, RN5*, 6*, 7*, VZN6*..T1, HEAVY HEATER 1 $54.68
88635‑89105 RN55..STD..HLF..CND..EFI; RN5*, 6*, 7*, VZN6*..T1..USA, STD HEATER OR *BV 1 $19.65

Edit: BTW, I just went in at the ToyoDIY site with a relatively generic guess for vehicle options. You can set your own vehicle with your VIN # and get a proper listing for your vehicle.

Thanks I'll give it a shot, there are also different options for AC vs. non-AC, but I figured that one out...

Unfortunately even with my specific VIN it still gives two options, I think this is the same problem my parts supplier is having...

Looking at the VINs for both my '94 pickup and '95 4Runner, they only have one listed for each and they are different numbers. The squirrel cage fan blade, and air ducts are the same, but the fan motor and the rest of the parts are different. On the other hand my '89 2WD pickup has two listed.

My bet is if you pulled the fan motor and looked at it's part number, then went to the parts list to see which unit it is. From that you would know which resistor to get.

Good call Bogo, I will try looking at the fan motor if I can't get it sorted out.

I stopped off at the dealer today, the truck is old enough that the VIN has been deleted from their detailed computer system, so they can't tell those sorts of details anymore. They also come up with the same two part numbers as possibilities. I am going to speak to the parts manager tomorrow and see if we can figure it out.

Another interesting thing... the dealer price for the resistor is WAY lower than the other sources I have seen, in some cases 1/10 the price, for once the local dealer is a reasonable parts option.

Took a quick look at the fan motor, the number is stamped on the bottom so it is visible while still installed. It corresponds to the heavy duty option. Thanks again Bogo, Mud members come through!

The local Toyota parts manager figured it out this morning, Canadian models have "standard" heating system, US models have a "heavy duty" heating system. So for some reason even with a US VIN the Canadian part appears as an option as "standard".

Not sure if there is an actual difference in the part itself...
