some a$$hat put a rock through my ps window a few months back to steal my cheapo Sirius radio. fast forward to present and I find the rock hit the slider controls and now do not work. How do I gain access to these behind the dash?

I dont have an 85 BUT I would think it would be similar to my 92.

You have to remove the dash as if you were going to install a radio. With all that gone, it should be pretty obvious.

On my 92, all the AC/Heater controls are in a contained box i.e. not like an fj40.

I have a Chilton's manual, but it doesn't have any info on the interior. I guess I'll just have to wing it and see. Not sure how to get behind the dash.

What i did on my 84, from memory, is remove all the knobs/buttons and the black part with the heat/cold, hi-lo, etc. on it and it pops out. Then you have access to the heater control. toyota wants 91.00 with my discount, so i ran a toggle switch and have one speed. You could rig it to have more, im just cheap and on a college budget. Had to allow for crawler gears some how...

I'll give that a try.
This thing was perfect when I bought it 3 years ago. some punk puts a rock through a window for a $39 radio. The glass cost me $200.

Pull of slider knobs, and pry the face off starting at the drivers side, I use the can opener on my knife to get in one of the slider slots. That will give you a good bit of access, it you need in deeper, pull the ash tray out and remove the lower center section where the radio is. Good luck Bob!
