Hi,

I'm getting ready to pull the head on my 22RE. Any hints/tips to secure the timing chain so that it doesn't slip off the crank sprocket while the head is being removed?

Ziptie the chain to the upper sprocket, thru the holes in the sprocket. If you wrap it all the way around it will suck up all the slack and it won't move down below.

I don't think the upper sprocket will go through the head if you are trying to remove it... Don't worry about the chain, I doubt it can be done without 4 hands at least... Getting the valve timing back is the important part, not weather the shiny links line up, and you won't be able to see the lower mark anyway.

If you are pulling the head, why not pull the water pump and front cover while you're in there? I know we have all done it this way, but in the end, a few more bolts for your A/C, PS and timing cover will give you peace of mind. jm $.02

You dont have to . In my case my chain was just replaced then the head gasket went. I dont think we even tip-tied the chain to the sprocket? Anywho...its easy. Hardest part is getting the tensior set after the head is bolted back down.
shouldn't you be replacing the time belt etc... while you have it all apart?
