Head unit has whining noise only when engine is running ,I can't get rid of .

We need pics. Your basic stereo harness should pretty much always have gray and a gray with stripe wires. It’s the pair that goes to the front right speaker.

Have you bypassed the factory amp?
No I can’t bypass the factory amp because I only have 1 gray connection and one white factory connection . To by pass the amp I think you need to have 2 gray wires b cause the wiring harness kit has 2 wire connection . One goes to the big gray connection and the other one goes to the smaller gray connection . I just don have a smaller gray connection .

Your problem is you are running the after market head deck with amp in it plus the factory amp. You need to run it through the two connector. Then unplug the amp and toss. You need the harness from head deck to factory that is two connectors

I only have one gray plug . I have the bigger one . I don’t see the smaller one any where . If I don’t have the smaller one what can I do ? It’s an engine whining noise . If I don’t start the engine there is no whining noise .

And just like that, we're at 10 helping posts and not a word from the OP as a courtesy to the forum to provide further information. This will end well.
Sorry on the road driving to st Augustine . Tried to answer alI the post on the road but they didn’t work . I’m here now so i will post reply’s again .

Is it possible I only have the 1 bigger gray plug and not the 2nd smaller plug on a 1997 lx450 ? I can’t find it anywhere . I really looked good with the radio out and a flash light .

Radio only? Or whatever media (cd’s tape, mp3) also? If it’s just the radio I suspect a pinched or damaged antenna wire.
Any thing I play through the radio , usb Blythe phone when I connect the phone to the wire or if I play a cd in the built in cd player . can hear the engine whining noise it goes up and down as I give the truck gas . The radio sounds good when the truck is not running .

Maybe. You may have no signal and it will be all static.
I might not have explained the sound very well . It’s more of an engine whinnying high pitch noice and I only hear it when the engine is running . If I give the truck gas it gets higher

Are you using resistor spark plugs? Are you using high impedance plug wires? Blown condenser in distributor?

There is a radio frequency thing under the hood that's supposed to help with that. I had it too.

I double checked all 6 ground cables under the hood, added the bolts to my antenna and that fixed most of it.

I will still hear it occasionally when I'm in remote areas and I have weak radio signal.

The box I'm talking about is mounted inside the engine compartment on the LF fender IIRC.

I’m not sure what plugs are in there . Can you give me the name of the best plug to use and I’ll buy them and replace them ? Can you tell me a good plug wire to get also ? How would I know if the condenser is blown or not ? Is there a way to test it ? I was just looking at plugs and the only one that has the word resistor next to it is the

P/N K16R-U plug . Is that the one I should get ?

Is there any way you can take a photo of the box you are talking about ? I will check the other ground wires .

@BILT4ME, See this post, is this what your are talking about?
What they said but, also check the condenser under the hood as the wire and insulation become brittle. It is my understanding this can create the issues you are having but, as I am not an expert on the subject, could be wrong.

Use stock plugs and wires, or you could go little cheaper in wires and get the blue ngk wires.

Is that piece you are showing the condenser? If so can you take a photo of where it’s located ? Is there wires going to be coming off of it ? I looked up the plug today and it showed his plug .? Is this the correct plug to get ?

P/N K16R-U . I will get the factory wires . Are the factory the best ones to get or are there after market ones that are better ?

This is off a screen grab of another 80, mine has been relocated. Two wires going into it, they typically fray at the point they enter the connector. I have also read sometimes they go bad as well.

Could some one answer this question ? Is it possible that the 1997 lx450 only had the 1 after market gray head unit connection and not have the small gray 4 wire connection ? I have really looked good and it’s no where to be found .

It always amazes me how many guys dive into the audio system, or anything electrical for that matter, without an EWD to help out.

The LX EWD shows two connectors for the radio. The larger one (color unknown) goes to the amp and antenna ECU, and the smaller dark gray one goes to the CD changer. All of the wire bundles look to be shielded except the purple antenna ECU wire.
I don't see a 4 wire connector.

Typically whine that changes with RPM is from the alternator. Grounding issues usually cause it. Google Alternator radio whine.
Im not sure grounding the negative lead of the speakers is a good idea if that's what you did.

I put a ground wire on the ground part of the rc cable that plugs into the back of the radio not right to the speaker . In most of the videos I have watched there are 2 after market connections. And they are both gray . One has more wires than the other . I pretty sure the smaller gray one has about 4 wires that’s the one I can’t find . I’ll see if I can find the video . And post it here . Here is the video that shows the 2 gray wires they you should use if you want to bypass the factory amp . . I wanted to bypass the factory amp but I can’t find the smaller gray wire the show in this and other videos. The smaller gray one in the video I’m pretty sure go to the front speakers . The videos I watched before I attempted to put in the head unit might have all been for Land Cruiser and not a lx 450 . The lx450 might not have the 2 gray connections you see in the video . That is why I was asking if the lx 450 only has one gray connection , because I don’t see the 2nd smaller 4 wire gray connection like you see in the video . The only 2 wiring harness is see is the factory white connection that was used with the factory head unit and the bigger gray connection . Maybe all I need by pass the the factory amp is to use the single gray plug but all the connections. I don’t know and that’s why I’m asking . All I have seen that you can buy all have 2 connections and they list the lx 450 . What I’m asking is does the 1997 lx 450 have 2 gray connection that are used for after market head units that allow you to buy pass the factory amp ? I can’t seem to get a answer to that question . Is there any way you can find out if the 1997 lx460 is supposed to have the 2 gray connections like you see in the video or is the 2 gray connections for the Land Cruiser only and let me know for sure ?
