Chatted with the mechanic, I think we're going to go ahead and have a valve job done (grind and adjust) since it's out. Head will be pressure and dye tested today or tomorrow.

having the PHH replaced with a high-temp solution...he said it fell apart when they pulled the head...couldn't be sure if it had been leaking, but I never smelled coolant, so I kinda doubt it.

Any sense in having the water pump and thermostat done? (i bought at 72k and have no records to indicate that they aren't both original) Would be good PM since the thing is torn open now, unless they are "bulletproof" (is anything bulletproof?).

thepartsbin.com had better prices on brake parts than my guy could get, so ordered all that up for him.

I keep telling myself: "...this is hella cheaper than a new truck, this is hella cheaper than a new truck, this is...."

Water pumps last any where from 150-200k depending on how tight the belts get tensioned. Yes on the thermostat, make sure the radiator is clean. New fan clutch if it is the black one, Blue colore is the current one. Clean set of injectors is a good thing, but not if they charge for a new set. RC engeneering or Witchhunter(www.witchhunter.com) are both good places to get the injectors cleaned. good luck robbie

Hey Robbie- sounds like a great gig!! Please drop me a line when you're in SoCal. We should at least meetup for a beer. Please post the link to your website here even if it gets moved somewhere else later.

I recommend that you use Toyota brake parts. That is just one of those things that you don't want to trust to aftermarket fit and quality. Many of us use non-OEM parts on our vehicles but, IMHO, your brake system isn't the place to cut costs.

FWIW, the price they posted for brake rotors on the above link is more than you will pay for Toyota rotors from CruiserDan. You really need to add his phone number to your speed dial. :D

I agree...parts bin sells oe for most brands...they have cheaper aftermarket stuff, too, but i always get the oe stuff. usually i could just take a printout of the partsbin.com prices and get the local dealer to match (before sales tax), but I must've not put on my "smooth" voice when I called the toyota and lexus dealers today

Are all Texans this slow? :D

i don't get it? for example, the pads are akebono, which is the same mfr as the pads i bought at the dealer last time. they also sell npn, ebc, bendix, etc. for less money than the OE stuff.

maybe i am slow...am i missing something?

ok I'll put you out of your misery. the guy named cruiserdan mentioned liberally in this post and who just posted himself is the parts manager of a toyota dealership in new mexico. He sells oem landcruiser parts to mud members at a discount that generally cannot be touched and he has very reasonable shipping rates too. Plus he keeps many obscure lc parts in stock and actually knows what you need when you call and so won't send you what you think you need.

also, dan has a well known propensity to hex the vehicles people who don't feed his dogs to his satisfaction so if you plan on being on this board and getting on his radar it would be best for you and your truck if you played along. Right now I suspect there is a half formed plasticine likeness of a houstonian taking shape on his desk and you do not want him to finish it.

to contact dan go to the vendor section and read his post or click on the banner ad for american toyota.

I like your approach here Dan, much more subtle than going at the man's truck directly.

Gee Simon, couldn't you wait till we got bored playing with the new guy?

Stevie,
I am a Texan though I don't live there now. I was born in Center, Texas, the county seat of Shelby county. I spent almost 50 years in Texas; most of those in Houston. I have tenure and poking fun at fellow Texans ( & Junk) is the way that I amuse myself on boring days at work. Don't take it personally, though you do seem slower on the uptake than most Texans. Were you a transplant or maybe you were reared in the DFW area?

I know Center well. After I left Houston in 89 I ranched for 9 years just south of there in Colmesneil and had friends who had a ranch in Center. No wheelin' that I ever found around those parts. Got out of Texas for southern California in 98 and never looked back. If I lived to be a 100 I'd never see half of the desolate trails here and no humidity or flying insects to speak of. One good thing for Center you don't get here - a very nice typical town square with courthouse and grass and stuff just like in the movies that pretend to be in 1940's California.

I am old Rookie. :frown: I try to stay away from those "how old are you" threads.

But.... I'm still more of a computer nerd than most here on 'Mud. :D
