HDJ81 fuel consumption test run

ON my HDJ80 with the 12 Valve 1HDT engine and an auto box, I get around 24 to 26 imperial MPG. Should expect 28 to 30 from a 5 speed auto (that seems to be the considered opinion in the UK.

Intercooled 1HD-FT gets a bit more economy but not much however an intercooled 1HDT should give a bit better than an intercooled 1HD-FT (24 valve)

that is exactly what i expected but i was pleasently surprised.
BTW, i know the HJ61 that Berni had got, on average, mid 24 to 26 mpg when she was driving and it really sucked the fuel when i was driving...
go figure
cheers

here is a replay i got from Clarence, he bought the intercooled HDJ81:

Dear Wayne,

Well, I’ve had my 1990 Land Cruiser 81 for all of a weekend and I already love this truck! Feels big, plenty of power, great whine from the turbo… and lots of looks from confused people as the realize the guy beside them is driving on the “wrong” side of the truck. It was pretty different at first being behind the wheel of a right-hand-drive, but after only a weekend it already feels natural.

Quick trip report of my drive yesterday from Calgary to Edmonton. Truck handled really well. Ride is very smooth. Cruises at 130km/h (80mph) without effort. Just to see what it could do, I took up to 160km/h (100mph). There was still some pull left in the engine, but it’s a truck, not a race car and I wasn’t interested in pushing it any further.

Fuel mileage wasn’t what I was hoping for from a diesel. Yesterday’s trip of 281km (176m) had fuel mileage of only 7.8km/L (18.4mpg). To be fair though, it wasn’t all highway driving. I got stuck in 2 traffic jams and sat for at least 45min just idling. I’ll keep track over the next few weeks and see what city driving averages out at.

I have no regrets about picking up the new rig. Thanks for hooking me up!

too funny, 160 km/hr and 18.4 mpg...still impressive for a 6500 lb truck. this was more of what i was expecting on our road test. i would be interested in seeing what it would be like on a trip trying to conserve fuel...

the truck is turning 33" meats, auto, 3" lift so there will be wind resistance to deal with as well as a heavy foot...

glad to hear another neutral input on the milage...

i made sure i double checked the figures just to make sure...
i was surprised to say the least...
cheers

That is about what I get at those speeds with my HDJ80.

Michael,
18 mpg at 160 k/h is amazing eh? try that with a gasser truck...

You know it Wayne! I am still amazed at I goog mileage I get running those big 35" Time for a new timing belt for mine though, it just turned 200,000K.

Speaking of 35" boots, what this you sold the White HJ75?? and here I thought you were just "thinking about it". Well I am sorry to see it go :(

So you really need to keep the PZJ, otherwise who will I chat with and wheel with that has a pickup...when I get mine :)

Cheers,

Michael

I'd like to see the mileage when you cut back and drive at 110.

Sounds like a nice rig.

My old 2.4 Turbo Diesel Toyota Hilux Surf (JDM 4 Runner) used to do around 20mpg (imp) on a run at 70mph and was lighter and had a much smaller engine than the Landcruiser. The thing about the 80 is it is so understressed that the engine is really working hard. The worst mileage I get on mine is probably around 19mpg around town. On a run it really is a very economical motor for something as heavy and aerodynamic as the Pentagon.

to further the test i drove the same HDJ81 to Edmonchuck to see what the fuel consumption at 130-150 k/h would be...
505 km at these speeds pushing a strong head wind used 75 liters of fuel which works out to:
19.01 MPG imperial
quite impressive if you ask me...
cheers

Hello all! I am new to these forums and indeed to the whole world of Cruisers. I will say with certaintly that my next vehicle is going to be a late as possible model HDJ. tlccruiser's Euro model is exactly what I am looking for. 'Cept maybe about 20 grand less! It seems as though I may have to self import but I would really REALLY like to get a normal (by US standards) driver side set up. Am I insane to hope that I can get into one for under $25,000 (US) ? This whole community excites me- I live in Seattle and you would think that there would be diesels everywhere but we Americans are stupid. And slow to change our ways- no matter the consequences. I really find hope in this little community I have stumbled upon and maybe this will be the road that takes me to my truck.

Your a lot more brave than I am running that diesel so hard. I've never taken mine over 130 km/h and I think running up to 160 km/hr seems just wreckless. My cruise control cuts out a over 110km/hr anyway. I'm sorry I just don't think these trucks have the gears for those high speeds.

This is why I'll never buy a used from diesel truck in Alberta. You guys on the Calgary Trail go way too fast. I have a buddy with a new Superduty (F-350 quad cab long box 4x4) he blew the turbo apart on that highway. I asked him what happened (seeing as it was a 6 mos old $65,000 truck at the time). He said nothing out of the ordinary. He was pulling his 5th trailer and was close to Calgary when it let go. Typical trip with the cruise set at 150km/hr. I told him to do himself a favour and keep that last detail from Ford.....

Ontario is restricting commercial trucks to 105 km/hr in the highways. I couldn't imagine trying to stop my 80 with a blown tire at 140-150 km/hr. With the way they handle it would end up on its roof for sure.

Slow and steady wins the race.....in the end....You got deeper pockets than me, I'm terrified to damage my turbo......
DW

That's strange. My cruise control doesn't seem to mind being set at 120km/h. Add in the fact that my speedo is out by about 11% and I'm cruising at 133. I've had it up to 150 and it feels exactly the same as it does at a true 110. It takes a fairly heavy throttle foot to maintain that speed, particularly with 115 pounds of boat on top of the truck...but the brick will do it comfortably. :)

Oh, and my turbo is still in 1 piece.

the 81 when in good condition feels VERY stable at 150 k/h, tracks straight, no shimmy, wobble, no floating or drifting... now if someone's is lacking in the maintance department then you might have concerns.
you have to remember when i was younger muscle cars were my thing and 150 k/h is nothing to those beasts...not that i condone speeding but highway 2 north that is just normal...

btw, blow a tire at 110 or 150 you will be white knuckling it to the side of the road...
