It's in there in the Engine Unit /Disassembly chapter..

Step #23 shows the timing cover being removed

Thanks for finding that!
What I'd love to see is the disassembly of everything else before that. I'd also like to see the reassembly and the torque specs. I'll check out the TIS this week.

Challenge IMO will be deciphering what you really have to take off versus what is listed in the documenation.

How are you finding that? I searched the entire thing but can't find these sections. Can you tell me how you found that using the main menu of the manual?

Click ENGINE/Hybrid System and scroll down to Engine Unit to the right of 1UR_FE Engine Mechanical

I only ended up doing the coolant valley plate repair. It wasn't too bad, but I've done a lot of mechanic work over the years. To someone who's never done much, the CVLR might be too much.

I might try the timing chain cover leak soon. I'll keep y'all posted.

This thread started just like my ponderings. I have a leaking radiator that needs replacing so I wanted to see if this is the time for the timing cover repair and or the CVLR. I’m thinking of doing the CVLR at the same time but just putting some permatex 82099 on the outside of the timing cover. Just checking to see if there was any progress in someone DIY the timing cover.

I stumbled across this engine autopsy today. It looks like an older 1UR-FE, but essentially the same as our GX engine.
Could be useful to watch when doing the timing cover.

I’ve been watching Car Care Nut on YouTube. His take on coolant leaks is that they happen because the coolant turns acidic over time. I think his recommendation was change it 5yrs/50,000 mi. Not sure if just a radiator drain/refill is sufficient or he means engine block dump too. I just did a radiator drain/refill myself and plan on doing at least two more radiator drain/refills in the next few weeks so most old fluid will be replaced with new.
Drain the engine block as well, fill and flush with distilled water and service with Toyota coolant.

@Acrad can you reshare me this link? Doesn’t work for me - new owner of a 2010 that I’m planning on doing the timing chain cover leak on (and coolant valley maybe, yay). Not a lot of documentation online and was going to do a 2 day subscription to the Toyota tech info based on this thread.

FSM would be super helpful to me now and in the future I’m sure. Thanks!

Everything you need to do the job is in this thread.

God speed! It ain't easy.

Outstanding, thank you both!

Going into research phase and will report back later success/failure.
Yep, if you study that thread, you'll be set. Just be ready for some tough wrenching. The hardest part for me was torquing the crank pulley bolt. 250ft/lbs isn't a joke, and trying to keep it from turning while tightening it was hard as hell. I had to enlist my 300-lb neighbor to help out.

Hit us with any questions. Happy to help.

I just did a quick search and I can't find any timing chain replacement videos for the 1UR-FE!
Really surprised there's no Youtubes for that procedure on an almost 15 year old vehicle.

You really don't need to replace the chain on these engines. At most maybe change the tensioners.
When I took my chains off and inspected everything, it looked brand new. Amazing how well-engineered those engines are.

Been debating strapping a GoPro to my head when I get around to doing this and posting it on YT. Editing will be fun…

Assuming you have the band-width and the memory (card) for a project that long!
