The head on my son's truck (22re) seems to have a bent or broken valve. My son also stripped on of the spark plug ports after he cross-threaded a plug. I am debating whether to just buy a new head from these guys: http://www.toyotacarpart.com/default.asp?p=2&gclid=CPmjhJz_qrICFURgTAodjW4ASw

Anyone use them in the past? $265 for a new head with valves sounds like a good deal???

thanks,
ML

I know nothing about them or what they are selling. Often you get what you pay for. May be quite low quality.

I'd go with Engnbldr instead. They have a very good reputation.

http://www.engnbldr.com/head-shop.html It'll cost a bit more, but well worth it.

The stripped plug can be fixed with a Heli-Coil insert. It'll hold fine. When you have the head off, check how badly damaged the valve and valve guide are. That may be all that needs to be changed.

While your in there it is a good time to replace the timing chain, etc..

Considering that retail for a new Toyota head completely bare (no valves or cam) is $878.25 I would be highly suspect of that. It obviously can't be a new Toyota head. And I second that statement that you get what you pay for.

Fixing the stripped plug hole is really easy if the head is off. I routinely Heli-Coil these holes now when a head is off, whether it needs it or not. NAPA sells a kit with a special tap and the inserts.

For your sons truck, if you need to turn it around quickly then I would definitely go with Engnbldr. Search toyotaepn on ebay to find him. I think you will find that his stock style head will not be too much more than that. His reputation is excellent. I had to have my head welded and decked a several years ago and I wish I had known this was an option then. Call or email them and they WILL respond and will try to answer your questions.

If you, or he wants to step up, his other heads will bring you a little more power. I am going with a 22REPerformance head myself.

If you have some time then it might be worth it to get the head off and have the valve issue looked at and if it is a reasonable fix then just fix it heli-coil the plug and slap it back on.

I will also echo the above, will that head do the job, I am sure it will. Will it be a quality casting and offer 200k miles of trouble-free service, probably not.

Cant go wrong with Engnbldr. Ted is the owner and is a very nice and helpful guy. Answered all of my questions via email and phone very quickly and honestly. Never heard of the other guys.

You don't always get what you pay for, but you never get what you don't pay for...

Good luck.

Thanks guys.

I just thought I'd save some money. I know enginebldr has good products. The motor has his timing chain kit... i will call him.
