Here's how the hand throttle works in my truck:

  • it comes out about 50% before there is any affect on RPMs
  • idle is 600 rpm
  • pulled out all the way I get about 1100 rpm
Since there is so much play in the hand throttle, I'm thinking it must be adjustable. Looking under the dash I didn't see anything obvious and there doesn't appear to be much in the FSM.

Any comments/advice/experience adjusting the hand throttle?

Another thought:

My understanding (and my personal experience) is that the hand throttle is intended to be "set" after you depress the pedal to your desired RPM. If I pull on the knob and do not also step on the pedal the pedal will not travel as far. If you are not using this method you may try it to see if it makes a difference.

that would be very smart if that were the case

This is also who mine works. I think that there is a lot of confusion around regarding the hand throttle as you can actually set it to your desired RPM. If you can't do it, then I guess you are operating it wrong or have an issue with the installation.

I've never needed to use the pedal. I pull it, carefully to prevent from redlining, and then twist it to lock. Holds great, and I can also stomp on the pedal if I need to spin the tires while I'm winching.

Mine works as CDan described. I've never had much luck just pulling on it, but works very nicely if you depress the throttle pedal first, then set the knob.

If I recall the directions... You can set the max rpm by turning an adjuster nut on the back of the throttle knob behind the dash, not in front. Then when you pull the throttle knob all the way out the rpm is set. Then turn to lock. I have never used the pedal and I have mine set to go up to 2000 rpm.

Mine says 'turn to lock' on it. SO you pull it out to the desired rpm, turn the knob a bit to lock it in place...voila. Although the locking mechanism doesn't work that well.

Mine would not lock either when I first got it. Tighten the collar behind the knob (against the dashboard).

I've tried this - mine does not work this way. The hand throttle is directly attached to the accelerator pedal. Pulling out the knob sets the minimum rpm at the pedal. Once locked, you can still hit the accelerator pedal to up the rpms. Pushing down the accelerator does make pulling out the knob easier, but it is not necessary nor does it make any difference on the max hand throttle rpms.

I'm going to check for said adjusting nut next time I can poke my head under the dash (I'm in a suit at work right now). I did see where the hand throttle connects to the upper pivot of the accelerator pedal - didn't look like there was any adjustment there. I did not look behind the dash at the back of the hand throttle. I'm still thinking there is just too much slack in the cable. But there has to be some adjustment.

The FSM has nothing on the hand throttle at all.

Same here.

This is where mine differs.

Not sure if it's late, but i had a similar issue on mine, there is a black plastic bushing that attaches to the bracket that hold the cable onto the accelerator pedal, u un-clip the black bushing and u will see threads, pull the black bushing apart and u will see a plastic nut (inside the black bushing) spin it to adjust so it becomes tight when it's fully depressed, so when u pull on the knob, it pulls on the pedal.

if it still is loose adjust ur accelerator cable so the pedal is tighter. while having the same RPM, that way everything is tight.

that should make it work, mine goes all the way from 650-2200 pending how far out i pull it.

This is exactly the information I was looking for. I'll adjust mine this weekend. Thank you and long live MUD!!
