One more question regarding the test....
There are 100 practice tests on QRZ...did you guyz know ALL of them COLD?
If so, I still have a LOT of WORK to do!

Know the rules and the laws, it seems like most questions on the test are from there. My tech test had 1 question where you had to apply Ohm's Law. It was shockingly easy. If you have access to Gordon West's book and quick read through that will net you a pass. If it's the ARRL tome, that's heavy sledding to get to the stuff that's actually on the test.

Everybody I've talked to had the question about rebroadcasting music from the Space Shuttle (legal), otherwise any music over the ham frequencies is forbotten.

I studied for my General on HamtestOnline and didn't miss a question on the exam. That study method rocks, but you have to pay for it.

Thanks Andy,
Im studying from QRZ, and the AARL book that I borrowed from Rusty TLC.
The QRZ sample tests seem to encompass EVERY DETAIL in the book, but has MANY more questions than what is found in the back of the book.

Man, I don't have enough time to study.

Ive got pretty much ALL of the questions in the back of the book down, and a lot of them are also on the QRZ practice exams...
Im not gonna BAIL, but I do wanna make sure I can pass the first time.

K

Dude; Im a total retard and I passed

Go through the questions once , understand the answers and your good.

Cmon...
I would call you "SPECIAL"...not so much "retarded"...:flipoff2:
Everyone who has taken the test says that its pretty easy, but...
Im not the sharpest pencil in the box either. Just trying to watch out for any curve balls.
Anyone have an recommendations on a radio/ antenna set up, and where I should get it (assuming that I pass). Keep in mind that Ill be using this almost exclusively on the trail (barring any unforseen enthusiasum for the HAM lifestyle...), so GOBS of money for crap Im not really gonna use is not really my preferrence.
Is there anywhere locally you can source this stuff from?
im diggin on the antennas that you folks have on the rear hatch.
Anyone using the hand held radios?

K

Damm man you crack me up, ( wee def need to have more  together )

Based upon Ali's incredible signal strength with his antenna mounted atop his roof I'll be switching from my current rear hatch lip mount to a center of roof mount. The difference is significant FWIW!

AFAIK there are no local shops that sell HAM gear. The best prices I've found are at Ham City a lot of guys also use Ham Radio Outlet I would advise you to shop around and figure out what you want then watch E-bay and Craig's List.

I used a HT (Handy Talkie or Hand held) this week end. It works fine. If you go that route you should consider getting an external antenna and mic, they make life easier. On Fordyce I just used the HT rubber duckie antenna the fourty is open enough to get away with that. In you rig the Rubber Duckie might not work that well.

If you go with a mobile the Ft 2800 is a good choice, they go on sale all the time for less than $120.

A friend of mine who has been in HAM for years summed up his opinion on antenna mounts to me two weeks ago, "Drill a hole." If I had a roof on the 40 I'd follow his advice. :princess: would freak if I tried that with the 100.

I really liked the Larsen antenna Andy had on his 40. It is very robust, he was whacking trees and rocks with it all weekend with no visible damage.

Congratulations Keith!!! Some of us got our call sign in about a week and I think Jack's was longer...no rhyme or reason to the FCC .

We'll do the official pocket protector presentation ceremony at the next club meeting.:flipoff2:

:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

Thanks fellas!
just went out and got some horn rim glasses and added some tape to them for some flare!
Now I just have to figure out what a good radio for me would be.
I dig around on the sales sites (hamcity etc.), and I dont even know where to begin with that...
When I do get one, Ill probably need a little instruction on how to work it, set it up etc. if anyone is available.
Ill probably have to wait for a bit as I just dropped over a 1000.00 on my front end.:bounce::steer:

Thanks for the encouragement, and the props.
It wasnt hard at all, just as you all had mentioned.
