The newer ones are pretty good...the originals not so much.

Mmmmm...dehydrated pork patty.

the old ones (MRE) were not so bad...but I would avoid the "pork patty" at all costs.

It is amazing what you will eat when you are hungry and there are absolutly no other options...

Good source for new style MREs?

You can get a pretty decent selection of them in the link that follows. The selection changes with new stuff being added and some stuff rotating in and out of being available. They sell not only different sized units of them, but you can buy entrees, desserts, sides, etc. one at a time if you want to try something out. I've got some of their boxed units of 12 complete meals which come with entree, side, dessert, drink mix, hard candy, misc, and even a heater bag. I've also bought separate single items to keep in my truck and rotate them out from time to time with new items. Decent company to deal with and they also carry a lot of other things too.

I keep a couple around, nice to have in the car when we travel in winter, I also take at least one with me on trail trips. The real mil spec MRE's have enough calories to last me a whole day. I wind up using them from time to time just to cycle new ones in. They are quick and easy food on the trail. :meh:

Most of the old MRE's were just awful. I would have starved to death had it not been for peanut butter and crackers and a very few that were edible. My favorite one - any of you other old timers remember this one - franks and beans! Literally said on the outer packaging "Not fit for pre-flight use"!

If you have a military ID card or know someone that has one the commissary usually has a box or two for sale. Used to be $7-$10 each.
Think you can buy them directly from the manufacturer, but they are civie versions.

I get mine from buddies when they come back from a FTX.

Chicken and dumplings is my favorite. when I work for the ANG I wheel and deal(trades only) for them.
My best haul was six cases :D

I think that Fajitas are the best one.

The MRE hamburger is a bit different, but damn tasty when you're cold and tired.

Yeah, that one was pretty good.
Spaghetti's a good one, too, which I find funny; because at the dinner table, I would rather starve than eat spaghetti with red sauce, but in the bush, it's one of my favorite MREs.
:meh:

One of my favorites used to be the frankfurter meal (Four Fingers of Death) with plenty of hot sauce....that is until I got a bad one while on a patrol.

I tend to stray away anything containing any kind of noodles. I haven't had a good MRE noodle yet.

Might want to watch how many of these you eat in a row. They have a reputation of binding people up. Never experienced this myself but have seldom eaten more then 1 per day whiile backacking.
