My roomie, Mike(Sine80), has an H41 with a goofy modified top plate. The shift pattern is reverse from that of a standard fj40 4-speed, the bolt holes on one end don't line-up like the standard 4-speed and the shift forks are arranged differently.

Anyone here have an idea on why the two top plates are so different?

H42 is the left one, modified H41 on the right.

spin the trans in 1st gear there are some "early" H41 that had a 5.29 first vs the "normal" h41 with 4.99 1st. This might be one of the differences as well

It is an early H41 with the 5.29.:) Are the earlier plates different than the later ones?

EVERYTHING IS DIFFERENT on a 5.29. Look at the # of teeth, and the size of the teeth on the 3rd/4th synchros and you will see.

Hey Mark, do the early H41's come with a reverse shift pattern? If so, can you take the innards and put them in an H42 case and machine the shift forks down to fit the H41?

Mark can you get a shift cover for the old h41 with a standard shift pattern?

You guys got that apart pretty quick Ryan. I was wondering what was up with that trans, I had never seen one like it before. I hope it works out for you.

No, early H41's don't have a reverse shift pattern.

The aluminum top covers don't start showing up until 1981, AFAIK.

What's weird is the minor differences in bolt holes. Never seen that before.

It looks like you can drop the H42 top cover in place of that H41 top cover and get the normal shift pattern back. The forks look to be in the right locations, just mounted to the wrong rails, i.e. 1-2 fork is on the 3-4 rail.

Perhaps someone disassembled the top cover and re-assembled incorrectly?

Or maybe that's the top cover for a cabover FA series truck w/ column shift?

Its quite odd indeed. I know for certain it is a 5.29 after several counts of the gear ratio.

We originally thought we would be able to swipe the top cover off my four speed and throw it on there to eliminate the reverse pattern. Turns out, the bolt pattern on the top cover is completely different and only a few holes are the same with the h41 tranny and h42 top cover.

Next thought was to remove all the innards from the h41 and install in the h42 case... However, when we looked at doing that, the large shift fork is thicker where it rides on the race. Meaning, it *seems* possible, but I would have to take that shift fork to a machine shop and have it cut down to fit the h41 gear set. OR...perhaps someone has a narrow shift fork laying around that can be installed in my H42 top cover. Either way, it seems to be somewhat involved to omit the reverse pattern.... :frown:

Edit: Also, there seems to be a slight differnce in the reverse fork too from the top cover pics...

Maybe it's a british tranny with reverse shift pattern!!!!

With all the differences, incompatibilities and mention of machine shop, why not just get used to shifting it backwards? If it's worth running at all, that seems like an ok solution.

I know where there's one of these on which I could probably get my hands.

My friends troopy is RHD and it still has the left hand drive shift pattern.

That was the plan. But a point was made in a split second decision were a lower or higher gear is needed, would you remember?

Believe me I want to bolt it up, dont get me wrong. The idea of having a reverse shifting transmission doesnt bother me one bit except for the quick decision thingy. I know there has to be a regular top cover for this somewhere with the different bolt pattern that is 'normal' pattern. Now I'm somewhat curious as to what it even is and if it can be identified.

You need to run the cover that came with the trans...end of story. Look at the width of the slot in the reverse shift fork; even that is different. Swapping housings isn't an option either: bearing ODs and IDs are different.

IT is simply its own animal.

We got it in tonight and drove it around the block works great. The lower gearing will work in tell the cash for the Orion comes in.
