I've got my t-case and I'm looking for a great h-41. Ideally I'd like it to have perfect gears and new syncros and a warranty. Impossible? Let's see.

I can get one in various places and various conditions for $550-$900. Pointers would be appreciated.

Beer money to you if you find what i want and I buy it.

Hi:

Tien ("Mustard40") said that the H41 he got from S-O-R was in excellent condition. A local friend bought a H41 from M-A-F and it was in great shape also.

Regards,

Alan

get yours rebuilt by rod at bay area trans in san jose.

i'll take a case of fosters or spaten. make that a cold 12 pack!

Yes, but he probably has an H42 not an H41! Sorry, no beer!!

ok, I'll bite. What's the difference between the H42 and H41, and how would one tell?

ALL North American 'Cruisers came with the H42 which is a slightly higher range first gear. Think of the H41 like the granny gears found in some pickups for the first gear.

If I'm not mistaken the H42 first gear ratio is about 3.9:1 and the H41 is about 4.5:1. The H55 has the same first gear ratio as the H41.

But there are at least 2 different H41's. A diesel and a gas version. I think that's where the difference in spline count originates.

h42's (stock USA for 40 series, 55 series, and 60 series) have 3.55:1 first gears.

there is also a 5.3:1 FJ55 transmission that's unobtanium.
10 spline output shaft and I'm told the "first gear is above the level of the cast main housing". I believe circa 1968-1971 versions (H40?) SOR has had a couple show up through the years, but none in more than a decade.

Is there a 16 spline output H55 5 speed? Must be ultra rare.

I've got one in working condition with a matching xfer case, if anyone's interested. 1st and 2nd are on the right, 3rd and 4th are on the left and reverse is way left and down. Yup: 4-speed. It's a weird beast. $ound$ rare to me. :)

http://www.marksoffroad.net Mark told me that parts for it are also unobtanium.

Yes it was a special order for BJ43, BJ46 and early BJ60's. I drove and worked on a few of them while I worked for a mining company down in OZ and New Zealand back in the early 80's. They were all early transfer cases (non split)
