I've had it for quite a while now...

Love it. Wouldn't change a thing.

Don't let some of those reviews fool you. The screen looks awesome.

Sure the phone doesn't compare to the new phones with 1.5ghz dual processors, HDMI outputs, 12mp cameras, yada yada. But this one works under water.
I run BackCountry Navigator (topo GPS) on it, and it works GREAT for offroad navigation. Battery life is good too, since it's not powering a freakin' server...

How does that (BackCountry Navigator) work when you don't have service?

One thing I love about my type S is the extremely long battery life. As long as you have digital service the battery will last four days making three or four calls a day. If the phone starts searching for analog service the battery goes pretty fast.

It works great with no service. That's the best part.

It stores the Topo data to your SD card, and uses the phone's built in GPS. In fact, to get the most battery life, I usually run my phone in Airplane mode (all radios off) with only the GPS running.

Before any trip, I hop on google earth (on my PC) and trace out a route I want to take (and label trails I want, stops...ect). I save that out as a .KML and it imports right into Backcountry Navigator. All the notes and routes show up just as they do in google Earth.

BCN has a full featured 16 day demo to download for free from the Android Market. Try it, and you'll love it.

So it has maps stored all the time? I really don't want to have to download maps for a specific area.

I'm not organized enough to plan stops and such out in advance, in fact most of the time I don't even know what route we will take or where we will be going. We just load up and pick a general direction. The nice thing is where I live you can't go wrong with that approach, there are plenty of trails and stuff to explore no matter which way you go.
