I'm going to use this as my starting point as I try to figure out how to get the "better logic" of the 2016+ system into the 2013-2015 model. I'm about 15% confident its possible but only about 2% sure its worth it, but there is a belief out there that the 2016+ system is far better than the 2013-2015 and I'm curious. Likely won't start this until late fall when temps are more conducive to outdoor work.

That would be very cool to see how that goes.

I initially looked at some of this as I was trying to track down an instrument cluster.....very very different pinouts, gen 1 -> gen2 was basically plug and play, gen2->gen3 would be a lot different.

I should also add as a follow-up that I finished the work the day before LCDC, and got to put everything through some substantial paces...some might call this brave, others might say insane to completely overhaul the electronics prior to running some insane trails like Black Bear and Imogene.

Everything held up fine and did well, my thoughts were that the MTS was a nice added addition, but when I felt slippage I was as apt to blame terrain/tires as anything else.

OTA I found worked really well, but a massive pain to actually engage and keep track of what needed to be done to make it work. Would be infinitely better if crawl didn't need to be engaged as well.

The Toyota part number is: 47025-60510

Are you talking about the different number stamped onto the ECU itself?

If I had a '08-'11 200 series this would definitely be on my mod list. Wish turn assist was something available on 460.

Thanks to @nwfl4runner for the fantastic detailed info, and to @ATwoZ for the follow-up stuff. Much appreciated!

Am I correct in my understanding that this mod will work on a 2008 Land Cruiser? Is there anything unique to the 2008 year that will not allow this mod? The owner's manuals I have show that CRAWL is an option, but it is not a feature on my rig. I would like to add the CRAWL functionality and use standard Toyota switches that are down right next to the gear shift lever.

Anything else I need to consider before trying this out?

Thanks,

Sean

Do you have a USA model 2008? USA models came with crawl control standard. This mod (among other things) added 2 more speeds to the "1st gen" of crawl control.

Also, these mods were done to a LX570 and not a Landcruiser. Many of the parts listed would need to be translated to the same part on a LC, as many are not interchangeable.

@lx200inAR - thanks for the quick response.

No, my 200 is a German model VDJ200L. The German owner's manual shows that CRAWL was an option but apparently the original owner did not choose that option. Bummer. My thoughts are that I should be able to upgrade it in a similar fashion as the LXs on this thread. Is this bad thinking on my end?

Full model #: VDJ200L-GNTEZW

I don't know if it's bad thinking, you just aren't going to know what is and isn't there that needs to be replaced from a model that had crawl. This upgrade was from a vehicle that had crawl to a vehicle with more advanced crawl.

That being said, this is probably a good template to start identifying the ECUs needed to get your project going. You may have different wires that may need to be added, but that can be derived from the wiring diagrams/FSM. The FSM is usually pretty good about identifying all the necessary sensors and ECUs for each subsystem in the vehicle.

Good news is the ECUs in play are all Toyota parts, not Lexus specific (except for the switch controls). Partsouq seems to say that model uses the same skid control ECU (47025-60360) from 2010-12. I didn't have access to the 2008 wiring diagrams at the time I did this, but my concern was I believe there was no "Network Gateway ECU (NGECU)" until 2009, so I'm not sure how CANBUS is routed. In the 2010, the CRAWL/MTS/OTA passes through the NGECU to the skid control ECU, and it needed to be changed to work, and you had to swap a 2013 NGECU in before those 2013+ features would pass through.

Well, at a minimum it sounds like quite a bit of research and a little bit of finger crossing and hope. I will definitely start with the wiring diagrams to compare US spec with CC to my Euro spec without CC. Combine that info with what is in this thread and I should be able to figure it out. May or may not be worth the work. I just finished reading a very lengthy thread that goes on and on about lockers vs CC and ATRAC, what is and what is not 4x4 vs AWD, etc., etc. I also found a thread on adding CC and MTS to a GX460 - maybe I can grab some info out of there too.

I will let everyone know what I find. And if anyone thinks of anything else that might help, I am all ears.

Thanks to everyone for all the info.
