hi i'm looking to put a GU front diff under my 80 series,

it's not a problem putting the 80 series spring cups and brackets on the GU diff. just need to know what to do about the steering drag link and drive shaft. ??

if someone can help me out that would be awesome

Actually my concern will be more on the R&P path .. if you are not using stock 4.10 ( which it's stock in both )

About drive shaft .. your concerns are about pinion flange bolt pattern .?

i have problems with braking stock 80 series CV

i've been thinking about putting a GU front diff in.

my main problem is steering the 80 series radius arms are gets in the way of the of the GU steering rod. i don't really want to flip the 80 series radius arm.

just want to know of someone that has done the conversion.

What in the hell are yall talkin about?

80 series - Coil sprung Toyota Landcruiser, 6-stud, disc brakes axles.
GU - Coil sprung Nissan Patrol, 6-stud, disc brake axles.

TACO keeps breaking CV's and wants a tougher front end.

Dana 60 and be done with it.

check the sizes of axleshafts between the D60, larger D60, cruiser and the nissan axles, you may rethink that.

Also, the nissan has a removable third, that is easier to setup than the D60, enclosed knuckles, and probably weighs less than the D60.

The unsprung weight increase, I would suspect to be a bit more noticable in an 80 as opposed to a heavier pickup.

edit: Ill dig it out of the ARB catalog: http://www.arb.com.au/media/products/air-lockers/application_chart.pdf

D60: 1.31" 30 spline
D60HD (FORDS): 1.5" 35 spline

80 series front: 1.31" 30 spline

GU front: 1.26" 32 spline
leaf sprung GU rear:1.51" 37 spline

***I was thinking of the rear axle, that is the diff to have up front, though it probably wont be high pinion. The ford 9" might be a decent candidate for a lightweight high pinion front diff as well.

So, if you are breaking birfields (CV's) in the 80, then you would be swapping to a GU CV outers? in which case, why are you swapping the center diff to the nissan, and trying to get 80 arms to work with Nissan drag links?

There is a 80 series high steer kit made for the 80 series knuckles made by hellfire fab: fj80 high steer the way you need it - Pirate4x4.Com

But, it sounds like Im not really understanding the whole story, and maybe making things more complicated then they need to be.

Can you elaborate the vehicle and components that you have and are planning to run? As the previous post says, longfields may just be the quickest and cheapest solution.

ok my toyota 80 series is a part time 4wd with a 383 chev engine on 37'' tiers, front and rear lockers

i'm looking for away to stop braking cv's, i have a nissan GU front diff and was thinking about putting it in my 80.

just need to know how to do it

By CV's I believe you mean birfields or did you mean driveshaft?

It looks like the GU front diffs arent any bigger.

If its your axleshafts your breaking just buy longfields (ya I know they wont be cheap shipped to OZ, but that'll fix the problem), and you wont have to cut and paste axle parts and steering parts. It may be a pain to get seals and steering arms that will work.

If your wanting to swap the GU front for different GU axleshafts to go with it, then your probably fine to swap the whole front axle, though like you mentioned the steering compatibility may be tricky. I wouldnt know though. :meh:

and the steering problem i'm having is not the draglink it's the rear steering arm that connects the to diff hub spindles together. on the 80 cruiser it's above the radius arms and on the GU it's under the radius arms,

my plan was to cut all 80 series diff brackets off and weld them on the GU diff, cut n shut the draglink and make up a drive shaft.

and was doing to use 80 series radius arms but the GU rear steering arm gets in the way.

OK, checkout the hellfire fab works link I posted above, not a cheap fix (around $900 US) but a beefy fix. Otherwise, Slee makes high steer based on stock arms.

Longfeild cv's are way strong then any Nissan cv and come with life time warranty are u currently running them? Build the 80 centre with a solid pinion spacer and lots of press load on the r & p and it will be a better diff then a built Nissan one.

I think you can build a D60 A lot stronger than either one of those axles

Yes but heaps more expensive to do the D60 over here and hard to get Rego's compared to the build 80 diff.

Ya, I dont think he read the first post.
Which is kinda why I one-upped the D60 with another un helpful 14 bolt recomendation.

I dont think its common knowledge for north america what all is involved when you want to modify a vehicle in OZ. So the reccomendations dont consider that you may need an engineer to look over your work before you even start it sometimes.

A steering 14 bolt would have to be made, not from factory AFAIK.

I did see a 14 bolt front axle build up on that extreme 4x4 show a few years ago though.
