I finally got my first FJ55 --- it runs and drives perfectly. I have a million questions about it so sorry in advance for all the stupid questions I will be asking shortly.

Two come to mind immediately.

1. If the clutch engages at the very top with the pedal almost all the way out, which way do I adjust it to get it closer to the floor

2. In the third picture it says it has an overdrive, where is the engagement for that? (oops, see next post for picture)

Thanks

your describing a worn disc, or no freeplay.

lets start with freeplay, you want some on both the clutch arm at the slave, and in the pedal before you feel pressure from the clutch. if have none make adj as needed so you have about 1/8" on the slave and about 1" on the pedal.

not familiar with hon-o-drive. take a pic of the shifters for us and we'll spot an extra shifter if you have one.

With you so far

I guess my question is ---- which way do I want the adjustment rod to go? Do I adjust it towards the firewall or away to get the clutch to engage lower?

Sorry about the terrible picture, not much room to focus

Thanks guys! I am really looking forward to fixing it up.

Nice roll cage. I have the same one. Also, where are the OD pics... Haven't heard of that one before. There should be another stick on the tranny hump. That's gonna be it.

What's with that spare tire carrier?

Speaking of tire carriers, I think that's what those bolts are on your quarter panel are Stew, inside tire carrier ?

Here is the pictures, I am guessing that since there are only two levers that it is something that has disappeared over the last forty years.

The guy I bought it from had the tire/jerry can gate made for it to go down south on a surfing adventure, never quite happened. I have mixed feelings about it as it is attached to the corner of the truck and I would hate to see what would happen if someone ran into it.

that white pull knob on the dash might be for the OD. i know some of them mounted to the 3rd member and were cable actuated, but you dont have that based on the above pics. if they also made a style like the fairy od unit it would be mounted to the back of the tcase. based on the sticker we know its not a ranger type unit as you can use those in 2-4/hi-lo

I have that same OD. There is a third lever in mine on the driver's side of the trans. hump. Look for my thread a page or two back. . . I've posted some pics.

Also, I couldn't tell from your driveshaft photo, but the unit is located just after the transfer case and effectively shortens the driveshaft. If you can't see it underneath and the driveshaft connects directly to the transfer case, then maybe the OD has been removed. From the little research I've done on them, I gathered that they aren't known for their long term durability.

Ok, so I adjusted the rod toward the firewall yesterday and could detect no real difference in where the clutch engaged. It does not slip but I have never had a clutch engage so far up before, does this indicate a worn clutch? I guess my next questions will be, where do I look for rust and how to I keep it from spreading. I live on the gulf coast and humidity here is through the roof. I plan on moving to Seattle in two years and there seems to be a lot of places there I can take it to have any rust issues solved, here not so much.

I'll buy that tire carrier off of you in the event you don't want it. I'd love to have one of those. I have some mystery bolts on the side of my rig, that may or may not have been something similar. I don't want to pull them yet as the PO painted the rig with them in. My pig used to be a school bus for a very remote location. ( what 4 kids in there tops?) I think my mystery bolts are from that era. (your answer Gonz...)

Back to your rig, shoot us a piccy of the transfer case and we'll be able to give you some insight into that mystery OD.

Cheers, welcome and good luck with your project. We're all here to give you more info than you ever wanted about it... ha!

As soon as I find a bumper for it I will be glad to sell it to you ---- People where I live can not drive and it feels like there is a target on the back of it.

I will get some pics later today or this evening.

Thanks for the welcome, my CFO says this is the last non essential car I get to buy so I am in it for the long haul
