wow. he got big. you were afraid he was going to be 70lbs. hahahaha. good looking airedale. you will be surprised how much smaller he looks when hes shaved down or hand stripped.

here's a pic of duke in the ring with the breeder at the montgomery county kennel club show in philly (largest all terrier show in the U.S.)
he looks much smaller stipped. he still looks young. (showing him was part of my contract when i bought him if she thought he was good enough. breeder does all the work)

Way late to this thread but in my opinion the best dog for kids is a Lab. Just a wonderful family dog. Loving and loyal, protective enough to take care of you without posing the inherent danger of other more aggressive breeds. I've watched mine place themselves between our boy and strange people and animals many a time. They take every bit of kid "abuse" they can dish out. Our chocolate is 1.5 years old and he and the boy are best buddies. Our 11 year old yellow lab acts like a mom to both of them. She grew up sleeping under his crib, and now sleeps on the boy's bed 9young dog sleeps in a crate)

I've grown up with bull mastiffs since I was born. They are very playful without being jumpy, so they never knock anyone over. They are short haired which has always been important in my family because my dad and brother both had bad allergies and asthma (plus it just makes cleaning your house way easier). They are just great dogs. In my mind they are the perfect mix of playfulness and calm.

Nice breed. I totally agree they are awesome dogs for kids. If a perp were trying to get at your family it would take a much larger caliber than a .22 to put one of those down. I'd go with at least a .30-30.

I've had 4 great pyrenees and currently have 2. Ive have aussies, germans, and a slew of muts. Out of all of the the pyrenees are the most laid back and protective dogs by far of them all. Kids cant get out of their sight if they try. Anything or anyone that would try to harm the kids would be insane with these dudes around. Our last one "Murray" was 12 when he passed:cheers:. When my daughter was 2 she made the great escape while we were running her a bath, not only did he stop her, but he actually pushed her back up the yard into the house. Just my 2 cents...

American Pit Bull, the original "nanny dog". Anything man or beast were approach one of my little ones around and she'd either take it down or die trying.

wow...just wow.

so, you're that parent, huh?

hope we don't see you on the news crying about your faceless child someday.

this pic pretty much says it all...

My bosses golden retriever, unprovoked, bit his grandson in the face while the two were sitting together watching TV. 70 stitches later the child and a new home for the dog.
My 5 yr old male AST (Spartacus winner, GKCA achiever) attacked the same dog twice in a year unprovoked. After being threatened by that dogs owner I did the responsible thing and put him down.
My 6yr old female APBT is the best dog I've ever owned. 100% reliable around my children (ages 4-12) and knows her duty and place in the house. Her new companion is an ABD/ AST mix. Great temperament, and a joy of a happy go lucky dog.
All that being said, I do think some dogs have a screw loose. Not necessarily the owners fault that they wack out at sometime or another, but the owner has to be ready to take the step of putting the dog down if need be (remember folks, a dog may be part of your family, but was bred as a tool. You don't rely on a broken tool to fix something do you?).
Any dog can be dangerous, it's just APBT and the like that are the current fancy of the news.

Does not compute. It's hard to believe these two posts came from the same person.

There is no way I would keep pressing my luck with these dogs, especially while I had young ones around. I hope nothing ever happens. While I'm sure your dogs are great, the risk/reward for having these types of dogs just isn't there for me.

A 70 stitch wound would be a minor incident with a pitt. Theyre not going to be satisfied until the victim stops breathing. Have fun.

My Alaskan Malamutes are absolutely wonderful with kids. I would recomend this breed to anyone. You have to like grooming tho;)

No dobermans in this thread? WTF? Best breed ever. Friendly, yet protective when necessary. Size-adjustable by selecting parents.

Syd is 65lbs. Stella, who you will likely meet in Nov will be a bit bigger, maybe as much as 80 lbs.

Mud price is great since I'm married to the breeder's sister.

And a blue, though I don't like the cropped ears:

That's my FJ back there in the first pic!:)

The best...

I've been around dogs my whole life, and I was a K-9 handler for years. ANY dog can bite anybody at anytime. The owner has to learn how to behave like the alpha in the pack to even begin to control their dogs behavior.

My choice for a loyal, smart, protective, and loving dog is the Cane Corso (Italian Mastiff). They are great, but not for everyone (see my comment above).
