So i have a chance to buy a 1989 toyota 4runner.

Its lime green, jacked for mudding, V6 and i think 5spd.

Its missing its rear window, but its been garaged since 2001, and from what i've heard has less than 100k on it, and about zero rust.

I can get it for 500$

what should i look for when i go to see it?

Pretty much any running 4Runner is worth more than $500 in the fair market... Check the oil for milkyness, and see if the engine turns over... 10 years is a long time for a vehicle to sit... You are probably going to have to at least check out everything to some extent... especially the brakes... Good luck!

Also find out if your state has to pay the back registration to get it on the road... In CA you have to, and it can take a $500 4Runner down to a $0 4Runner pretty quick...

Nah my PROVINCE only has aircare. Similar to your emissions control thing. Costs 20 bucks. pretty much everyone passes. its just a cash grab.

Thanks ill do that. After ten years, i should probably drain that fuel out of the tank since it probably never had a long term storage product put in eh?

Yeah, I'd drain the fuel and probably put on a new fuel filter too. Check the oil and if you do bring it home, I would put changing all the fluids on top of the list along with the other normal tune-up items.

Oh and I'm pretty sure that without pictures it doesn't really exist:grinpimp: oh and 89, is it a 2 door or 4 door? That is that odd year where it could go either way.

i think it has the removable hardtop so... two door. i wont see it till sunday so until then its pretty much all speculation.

okay so i looked at it, its got a 22re with 293xxx on it. theres no milkiness in the oil its a 5 speed, the battery was dead so i couldnt turn it over. the rear window motors broken. the entire undersides been undercoated and its got a 3 inch double tube front and rear bumper.

thoughts? ill post pics in an hour.

Technically if it's an 89 model year then it's the earlier body style, they did start producing the 90+ hard bodies mid year 89, so some people get it confused...

Didn't they also have a 2 door hard top that was only offered in 89 or 90.

Removable top is why I bought my 88. :D

Hope it is a good score for you.

If it were anywhere near TN, for $500 I'd OWN it. If it is a 5spd you are set. 22re 5spd is the ****. For the money, you can do a good tune-up and wheel the wee out of it.

So did it come home with you?

I spent 4 hours moving one big mother f **** hottub and that bad boy becomes mine on saturday. yes it is the 5spd.

needless to say im pretty excited. :grinpimp:

one things though i need a new center console, if anyones got a parts car laying around with one in it ill pay you for it

Awesome find! How the heck did you steal it for $500?

A :I scrounged 5 people together to carry a 6 person hot tub out of someones backyard over a fence and get rid of it. :p

B: Its been in her 2 car garage for 10 years. its currently the house storage bin, and she wants it gone.

Also, when i was there on saturday i found out it still has the factory set of rims. :D

Looks like a deal...I say buy, and replace all fluids and tune up stuff to the tune of a few hundred dollars right away.

Also, for style points, when you buy it, I say you turn the tires over from where it sits fast enough so that all of that sheet flies off the roof in a cloud of dust as you head out to go wheel it!!!
