You probably did not have the proper drawbar. The OEM hitch has a drawbar tube that is much shorter than your garden variety hitch and the pin hole is in an odd place. as a result the OEM drawbar is short and has the pin hole moved in order to be sure that the drawbar does not protrude past the front end of the tube when it is inserted far enough to pin.

That what I'm going to look at....mod the drawbar....drill hole or bandsaw or drill hole and bandsaw...can' tbe that bad...
