Wow. I don't know what to say!! I hope you didn't pay for that. That is not a good gear pattern at all. Your call on installing that. I wouldn't. Are you paying for these attempts at installing gears? Send the pictures back to the installer and get your money back. Might be a good idea to find a better gear installer. Go to Toyota Gear Installs and check out professional gear installs that is how they should look.

Take care

Thanks for the link. I see this guy is not satisfied with patterns that look way better then mine. I could not find any contact information though? Does anybody know what shop this is?

I will be calling the shop that did my setup, Monday morning and sending them pictures. I will report back with their response. At this point I am not really wanting to send it back to them. They have already had two attempts and failed.

He is in Chandler Az in the US. Email him and state your case. He may have pity on you and give you a great deal. Must be the nicest guy i've talked to. The shipping will kill you if money is a problem. There must be somebody around you that is familiar with diff set ups. I'am just outside of Vancouver B.C but I have my front and rear to regear of my cruiser on the go and don't have the time till early next year and shipping won't be that cheap either. Let me know how it goes.

Hope for the best, take care and good luck.

Just to add a thought. Are there any vice marks on the old flange??
Droping a diff could easily bend the old flange, but holding the seventy plus pound weight off third member by the flange improperly could also bend it. Make sure you get your reimbursement and seek another diff builder. My thoughts only.

Take care.

Zuk is one of very few that I would reccomend for setup, other than us of course:). The pinion is very shallow and I wouldnt be surprised if there is no depth shim at all. Still I would reccomend TALKING to this guy before publicly posting his mistakes.

Hey BJ71-
Send that nasty install my way...I'll do a nice link with plenty of pics....before and after. Email sent to you. ZUK

I have no intentions of mentioning the the business's name on line. I started this thread to gather information and learn so I can make sure I end up with a quality install.

Ok, I spoke to the shop owner this morning as well as sent him pictures of the gear pattern. He is as unimpressed as I am. He was going to speak with his installer and straighten things out. He promised that if I returned the diff to him on his dime for shipping, he would personally make sure it was done correctly before leaving the shop. I cnat ask for any more

So I agreed to give him another chance to make things right before sending it elsewhere. This will keep my warranty in tact and save me more out of pocket expense on shipping and labour.

Keeping my fingers crossed and I will post up the results when I get it back.

Sounds like you were able to come to a solution.

Hi All:

Well, did that shop fix your third member? Is the back lash set-up right this time around??

Regards,

Alan

No, after three attempts things don't look any better. The pattern is not any better and now their is virtually no back lash at all. I shipped it to Zuk at Toyota Gear Installs for a proper set up.

BJ71-
I received the tote during lunch today....put it on the bench and I see something is not right right away with the pinion pre-load...real loose...almost wobbly. That makes it very difficult to get a good backlash measurement....bl seemed tight at around 3~5. I'll know more tonight.

This is getting interesting....pass the leak test.
I cleaned the teeth and applied yellow paste...patterns are terrible...can't even get a good read on the drive. I can't wait to get the case out and check for a pinion shim...if there is one.

It did have a solid collar. It had 0 pre-load...I actually felt a slight wobble or rattle when I rocked the pinion flange back and forth so that was way too loose.
I found 2 shims that determined pinion depth...they added up to only .0265"

I added another .030" to the pinion depth for a total of .0565"...this tells me too deep here
I also trimmed off .005" from the solid collar with my mini-lathe and now I actually can measure 3~4 inch/pounds pinion pre-load so that means the solid collar was not set correct by at least 5 thou.

This is the coast....it suggests that I can tighten up on the BL and pull the pattern closer to center...more to come tomorrow. ZUK

Ok BJ71...this is what I find...3 additional depth changes here....

First, I went more shallow .049 drive and it looks just as bad
P1050049.jpg

The coast .049, as expected will look a little shallow here
P1050050.jpg

The pinion drive 049 looks as expected bad
P1050051.jpg

Change the depth now and go all the way to 060 driveside looks bad
P1050052.jpg

coast 060 looks a little deep maybe as expected
P1050053.jpg

Now we go extra deep....drive 072 drive looks bad as before
P1050054.jpg

The coast with .072" as expected is definately deep
P1050055.jpg

My final conclusion is that the ring and pinion is "bad" from the out of place wear....notice the coast side is reflecting the expected patterns with depth change and even suggests that .056~.058" could be the ideal depth. The drive side is the side that sees all the use so it's screwed up now. If I set this up at .058" then there will be noise on acceleration and quiet on coast...it may quiet down with time(a year) as the high spots wear down.
Sorry BJ71:frown:

Hi All:

That is suck-ass news, but I think it is is from a reliable, third-party source. :frown:

Can you pursue legal action against the shop that did the original work for redress? From ZUK's reply I'd say you are out thousands of CDN$ for the ring & pinion set and labor, not mention lots of hassle and having your rig down!

Good luck with this! :)

Alan
