THANK YOU AJH760!
Thank you for taking time going through this thread! I will do my best to keep it going as long as I am having fun with my daily driven ADV80!
More updates coming soon!

Great thread! I have enjoyed going through it all today and appreciate you posting your experiences as you built your 80. It will no doubt help others within the mystic 3FE club.

THANK YOU OneManArmy!
Just trying to share my experiences; good, bad or otherwise…

LOCKERS… hmmmm, hehehe not quite! What a slacker I am! Too busy driving around, driving to work every day, too busy sort the details. It's kind of a waist to have them and not have them hook up yet, HU?! But I will get them soon! I want them finished! I want to be able to push that button and have 'em locked!

Fantastic write up and great pics, that is how a write up should be done. No detail left out so the next person can follow along.

Great choice on the tire size and love the overall look.

Did you ever get the lockers working?

THANK YOU TLIN!
LONG LIVE THE ADV80 3FE! 245,697 miles and cruising along! DAILY!

You don't mess around when it comes time to write up a trail report, nice work!

Great build, go 3FE!!!!

Not sure if I have posted this before on the fact that the factory Toyota filters for the 80-Series are WASHABLE!!!!

I've purchased two of the factory filters and taped up the flimsy factory box so I always know which box is the ADV80's filter. This way I can swap it once I'm back from dusty trips. When you wash one, it does take a while for the filter to dry even when you blow it out with the compressor. Or at least I want to make sure it's dry. I learned this trick of swapping filters from my rally days in that I would have several filters and would swap them after each stage. When you are running a production class vehicle, clean air is everything! For the ADV80, its a convence and preventative maintenance and with 245,000 everything counts!

Time to get some other work done along with swapping the air filter…

Side note on working on the rather tall engine compartment and my height challenged reach with 29" inseam requires some vertical assistance!
This Rubbermaid step has been a nice addition to my kit!

FINALLY getting around to tackling this mess of an intake!

Got some factory replacement items!

17881-61110 is the shorty tube
17882061080 is the corrugated or flex tube. If you only change one, this one is the most important.
15760377116_6807679d8d_z.jpg

15598903487_91b28592c5_z.jpg

These items are going to look way better than the 100MPH duct tape, but better yet will PERFORM way better! Heat just makes these RUBBER items BRITTLE PLASTIC over time! If you have your 80-Series long enough, you are going to replace at least the corrugated tube! I thought best to replace both while I was sorting it out.

15760379916_056f8ced01_z.jpg

As you will already know or find out, there is a metal inlet tube in-between the two rubber inlet tubes and I pulled this out to clean as well.
15164627053_9a2d24f3de_z.jpg

I used carb cleaner to blow out the side inlet tube. lots of crust and buggers.

More to come...

15760380096_ae128a19f7_z.jpg

While I was in there I may as well clean out the mass airflow body.

15598653728_8a48980033_z.jpg

This is the inlet side and as you can see, it gets "dirt-dursty-crusty!"
PAY VERY CLOSE ATTENTION WHEN UNBOLTING THE MASS AIRFLOW SENSOR FROM THE AIR BOX COVER AS THEIR ARE SMALL SPACER WASHERS BETWEEN THE TWO! SEE THEM IN THE ABOVE PHOTO. It is very easy to miss these little suckers and you will be cursing and chasing them down the driveway.

15598907777_51093f112a_z.jpg

Funny how dirt builds up in here. Make sure you clean it all out. I typically try to spray in the direction of airflow. Just make sure you take your time and spray spray spray! You are in here, so may as well do a good thorough job!

15599252240_42b306d6c1_z.jpg

Button it all back up and looking nice!

Now, a little discovery… As you can see:
15785641772_1f3a0ab5ea_z.jpg

15760384016_39b455c21e_z.jpg

15164119964_b4181ae540_z.jpg

These are the air inlet tubes that I pulled out and it is obvious that I have yet to slow down the oil breathing 3FE.
Back in my post #302 regarding PVC Oil Catch Cans, there was no clear-cut instructions for the 3FE engine. Here is a link jump back to the threads I saved from 'MUD:

https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/gcrad1s-1992-adv-fj80-land-cruiser.233037/page-16#post-8940562

Moving forward from that old post, I have taken one small baby step forward:
12490723665_de269309b1_z.jpg

I've added this oil catch can located on the back of the valve cover as it ported directly into the intake manifold. It is catching oil, but it does not seem to be the major contributor on inlet-Valdez.
12642737585_f85193a04d_z.jpg

I now know it is the PCV valve on the front of the valve cover and will put another catch can their.
In true TRD fashion, I always have "research on my mind!" hehehe

15752298731_312ba8663a_z.jpg

So much more to do to the ADV80. And then the other distraction wallet-reduction device. But in all actuality, its through the bikes and the forum ADVRider.com that lead me to IH8MUD! More to come!

Spare Tire Carriers… Yep, seems simple enough… But lets start with the simple-simple.. And while "simple" is the theme, I have to think beyond the simple…

Lets start with the three general directions:
1] Factory JDM Spare Tire Carrier and think about tire size
2] Stealth Spare Tire Carrier Mod
3] Aftermarket Spare Tire Carrier

15880975345_589feed239_z.jpg

1] The JDM Factory option seems logical enough, but is hard to find as the 80-Series did not come with this option to the USA. But Canada got them. Finding one from Canada is not so easy. Then comes the question of tire size limit of the factory unit? Does anyone know anything about the JDM version and its tire size limit? Found a cool image of one in this thread (post #4) as someone was asking about mating a Nissan unit onto the 80-Series.
https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/installing-a-path-finder-spare-tire-carrier-into-80-series.454648/

15695213887_4f0ef5e9f8_z.jpg

2] The Stealth Mod is basically making use of the factory bumper and modifying it in such a way to carry the spare. I like the resourcefulness of it but then it takes time to plot-plan-source-execute the ideas. Found this thread from MUD'member LightFighter that I really like:
https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/another-stealth-tire-carrier.811750/

photo43.jpg

2.2]
SHREG has a really nice bumper built close to stock-look too:
https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/not-just-another-rear-bumper-build.800889/

15695214227_21175f1b51_z.jpg

3] Aftermarket is great and while I have my eyes on a ARB/ICON/SLEE/KAYMAR type units, SHIPPING SHIPPING SHIPPING cost is EXPENSIVE on top of the EXPENSIVE bumper! While I have not ruled this option out, I do tend to look at location of mfg in proximity to my location. I do need to explore this more as well.

As stated in the previous post, the ADV80 made the front window at the debut of the 5.11 Tactical Retail location in Riverside, California! The photo was snapped during the 5.11 Tactical Moab trip as I tagged along with 5.11 Tactical's creative director and MOTUS World's West Coast representative. The photo was snapped by John Laptad of Portland, Oregon. More ADV80/Moab photos from him soon...

In route to Moab, Utah, it was a bit of a marathon side-trip detour with Kodachrome Basin, Chimney Rock, Bryce Canyon National Park, Grand Staircase - Escalante, Capital Reef and Goblin Valley to tick off on the to-see list!

My 1/10th scale Axial SCX10 overlooking a MASSIVE view!

As our trip carried on, we got into elevation and the white fluffy was still in tact:

And we traverse our way back down.

Enough Moabtrip-tourista' photos, lets cut to the chase! 5.11 Tactical has worked with world class photographer, John Laptad from some time now. John Laptad is a motorcycle adventurist himself so we had plenty to chat about. But we came here to do work and I was honored to obtain the following images:

Time to get back into the MUD'saddle and get posting!
16150417095_fa8f5b0b49_z.jpg

Back in November of 2014 my buddy and I did this little quick trip as the fishing season in Southern California's High Sierra's was closing for the season. We were heading out to Coyote Flats located in Bishop, California.

15964370869_320a6c71e4_z.jpg

15964381689_2d1de09131_z.jpg

Most of the trail is near 10,000 feet and the little ADV80 3FE “GET-OUT-AND-PUSH” in-line 6 crept around up there like it was no ones business! The roads are easy although narrow and steep in places. Snow can block the trail well into July, but with the lack of snow and rain for southern California, our trips saw only dry dirt.

15963115370_e858de9c89_z.jpg

Our whole mission was to camp on the edge of John Muir Wilderness and hike to a couple of little secluded lakes just inside the wilderness boundary. We would also be able to catch a glimpse of the Palisade Group, the second highest cluster of glaciated peaks in the Sierra Nevada! Yes, there is a reason for CRYSTAL GEYSER water company located on the HWY395!
15963117440_ea84927322_z.jpg

Notice the snow on the ground!

16149684722_ac04bf7cc5_z.jpg

For those of you looking to "ESCAPE" and not looking to put your rig at great risk, Coyote Flats is a great place to check out! We only saw two other folks on this weekend and it was only near the trail head in Bishop! But it was rather cold in November, so it made for some great cold weather camp gear testing!

Thank you Gorilla! And if ever you run across some super-dope JDM off road wheels, let me know!!! hehehe

What amazing photos man!

Making our way up to Coyote Flats - Bishop, California on a cold chilly November night! This is Eric of Yotamasters in his hot rod 4Runner.
Just the perfect weather for the ADV80 as it loves to breath the crispy air!

Oh how I miss the Eastern Sierra, nice photos man.

We made camp in this clearing at the furthest back portion of Coyote Flats.

I did a little morning scouting of the area:

To another larger and more scenic lake. And the sun is setting fast. Eric gets some casting in and it soon time to hike back down to camp.

We get the fire going for warmth:
