For quite a few days now I've been sprucing up my heater fan so I thought I'd post up a few photos to help others who are thinking about doing the same.

Firstly here a picture showing the typical "rotting" of the original foam plastic material.

And here a picture of the fan assembly before dismantling.

And here's a picture of the brushes showing how little wear they have sustained after 28 years.

Here another photo of the brushes (removed)

Those permanent-magnets in there (on the sides) are very powerful!

Here's a picture of the rotor showing the "chewing gum" the Japs used for balancing

Now I'm putting it all back together. That's a little bit of grease on top of the rotor shaft. Notice that I've been painting things too.

I added about 4 or 5 drops of oil to the felt to keep the bushes lubricated for another 30 years.

Aussis will be familiar with these "stubbie holders". I cut up 2 of them to recover the "fresh air door". (I found this fabric-covered foam-rubber to be ideal for this application.)

Here's the newly-painted fresh-air-door with the sound-deadening cover I have cut for one side

And here's the "contact adhesive" (glue) I used

And here is the lower part of the fan assembly with the fresh-air door (with foam rubber "covers" on both sides) inside. (Obviously I painted that piece of sheetmetal there too.)

Here's another photo showing the door more clearly:

And I cut the gaskets that seal between the fan-assembly and bodywork from a "sleeping mat". (Now we will be one short for our next camping trip. Oh ---The sacrifices others must make!!!!!:D. Someone will have to go without one.)

Here are the new gaskets glued on with contact adhesive.

I touched up the paintwork before putting the fan back. (Actually it was a bit more than a "touch-up" because that louvre area was quite badly rusted!)

And here is the finished fan assembly refitted:

Whoa! be careful there, Japs is a offensive word towards the Japanese; often used towards Japanese-Americans, Otherwise ethnically Japanese. Some folks have been busted for less on this forum for racial slurs like that.

I put a nut and washer on the end of that "speed reduction resistor" because it always looked untidy without them.

Finish19.webp

Used stainless fasteners wherever I could too.

Here's a view from the inside:

Well that's it folks.

X2!

Oops. I thought the first person was saying that "tongue-in-cheek".

Well anybody who really knows me would know I'm not racist.

Hell. The world has sure got sensitive. To me it is just an abreviation of "Japanese" and as such I never foresaw how it could be regarded as offensive.

OK. I'll say Ta Ta to that word from my vocabulary!

Edit: And of course I apologise to anyone who may have been offended

I think there is a special exemption on December 7th;)

Nice job!! How about a shot of the whole engine compartment so I can feel jealous.
Going to put this project on the list

Heck. I don't usually wait till I'm invited to do this either.

As soon as I read your post I rushed outside with the camera - But it's raining!!!!!! Damn.

Rest assured though - You'll see my engine bay again sometime soon!!!!!

(Since it is the only really photogenic part of my BJ40 at present, I can't help but show it off regularly.)

no using that term anymore, thanks!

Pearl Harbor?
Cruiser?
or J&p?

As far as I'm concerned it is an abbreviation of Japanese. I wonder if Mot finds it objectionable???

SSSSHHHHUUUUUSSSHHHHH! It was indeed my use of that shortened "J-word" that was judged "offensive". I will never use it again on this Site (despite believing - like you - that it is just an abbreviation).

Gosh. I wouldn't have thought people could suspect any of US of lacking respect for the Japanese. Why would we be so obsessed with their vehicles if that were true?
