I'm looking at doing something a little different, so first I want to see how many would be interested in an option like this.
Right now the idea is to have it made from anodized aluminium, sold as kits with the option of buying individual pieces, with the ability to configure it in any way you want.
The reason behind this invention was that the usual options out there are very limited, you either have a 1 or 2 fuel can option, they are usually divided and set up to accept the standard 20L fuel cans only. This option allows for expansion and allows for carrying of other types or if not necessary, not even fuel cans, smaller coolers, beer, whatever.
Since it is versatile I am looking at having just a ratchet strap holding the cans (or whatever) down. Making a clamp would limit the types of things you could put in there.

Here is what I want to know from you guys:
Interested?
Make a locking latch of some type (that would limit options)?
Leave as is with a ratchet strap as tie down?
suggestions?

I'll be getting it priced soon, likely be in the $100-130 range per 1 complete fuel can holder. I'm trying to stay competitive as best as I can.

I voted needs a lock. I really like the modularity built into it. Having a way to secure the cans kind of like other carriers so they are lockable and keep people from undoing the lids would be nice. In the end anyone can punch a hole in a can if they want it bad enough but having some kind of deturent at least keeps them from cutting a strap and running.

Even if the locking strap/mechanism was sold separately then it would give people the option. Kind of have all the units made to accept it but not require it.

I'm looking at that option, as well as trying to come up with an option that would allow mounting it flat, but that is getting to be more complicated. I don't think I can do a 3 sided mount option that expands to multiple cans.

When you say flat mounting you mean for a roof install?

I have been with people that carry gas on there roofs and it looks like a pain and also put a lot of weight up high.

Yes, one of the guys has suggested that, I personally don't like that type of mounting and think it is dangerous as it can leak, as well as a large pain for access. But if I can make it work, it would mean that it can do everything in one package. Right now that bracket can also be mounted on the roof but sticks up the depth of the can.

Thanks for the input, here as well as on the Coastal Cruisers forum. I've gone back to the drawing board to come up with something a little different. I'll be incorporating a lock into the new design.
I am also not a fan of carrying that much weight up there, it's bad enough I have the tent and a fairly heavy roof rack, no need to add 20, 40 or 60L of fuel to the mix.

I REALLY like the modular approach. Flat mounting is fine for me. I am working on a bumper design for my 40 that would use the flat mounting spare tire carrier on the driver side for fuel cans.

In addition to needing a lock, I would also like a way to cover the openings of the fuel cans (put the cans in so the opening is up and towards the back. This way the cans can be locked in place AND your can lock access to the cap.

I'm working on a revision of the design, still modular and expandable, but a little different. Looks like everyone is interested in a locking option so I will try to figure out something that will be fairly universal.....it would be easier if all the manufacturers actually stuck to the same dimensions.
