Gas Tank @#@@$&$@!

I sprung a leak in my FJ55 gas tank the other day. Finally figured out, it's got a crack in the inside area of the tunnel for the spare tire crank. So I go get one at the local junkyard to use as a replacement. Looks pretty good from the outside. There's a little rust insude the filler tube. So I take it by this radiator shop and the guy says, 1) We can't clean them any more, EPA won't allow us and 2) it's pretty rusty inside. I told him about the crack in mine and he said, "Oh, I can solder that. Just bring it by". I guess they don't have to clean them so solder them.

What's wrong with cleaning them? Too much of a toxic waste problem?

Anyone want to buy a used FJ55 gas tank? I'm not sure I can ship it in the condition it's in!

I just spent ALOT of time with the tank from my 45 (zero aftermarket) I finally found a guy that boiled it out and hand soldered all the seams but it took about 6 weeks. No other shop fro 3 counties would touch it.

'55 gas tanks are notorious for craking/leaking. I kave not been able to find many aftermarket replacements, but you can still buy new ones I believe for around $350-I think. Man-a-fre and and the Australian company that makes their long-range replacement tanks offer a 45'ish gallon tank for about $475. My buddy just bought a used tank from Specter because he could'nt find one near us for $150-before shipping. I hope you did better than that on the used tank you're not gonna need.

I just got done pulling my old one. I don't know why I was procrastenating about it. It wasn't that bad. Of course it had been in only about 3-4 years. I wish I could afford the bigger tank, that would be cool. I'm going to have the old one soldered. Any idea how long that kind of repair should last? I suppose I'll keep the one from the junkyard if I can get it cleaned somewhere. I paid only $75 for it. If I can clean it, I suppose I'd sell it for $150 plus shipping, too. Anyone interested, let me know.

I wondered what ever happened with that. Now the real question is, would the shop consider doing another. As options get scarse, we need good sources for these kind of services.

I told the guy that did mine that I would be calling on him again and he O.K.

BAD NEWS THO... I pulled the tank back out last night to start wire wheeling the interior of my cab and its still leaking I guess I could put a liner kit in it and Rhino line the exterior but now I'm considering relocating the tank out of tha cab
