Per the manual, the gas tank is 25.4 gallons. My question is this... is the 25.4 gallons theoretically reached when the pump shuts itself off? If I feel like it, I can usually add another gallon to the tank after the pump shuts itself off. So if I manually add some gas, am I going over 25.4gal or trying to reach that number?

I ask all this because I just got an Ultra-Gauge and want to make sure I have it reading things as accurately as possible.

Thanks!

Theoretically depends upon the length of your nozzle. IIRC, the fuel shutoff occurs with the port on the coiled air hose gets blocked. This can happen if the fuel backs up in the filler if it's pumping too fast or if the level reaches the nozzle. But in general, I'd say full is the capacity of the tank not including any volume in the filler neck.

I have an ultra-gauge (because of a FR 45 gallon aux tank) and have never been able to get things precise.

Have you ever had any problems with your aux tank? or the pump or anyhting?

There have been times when I have managed to squeeze in 3 extra gallons of fuel after the pump cuts off. I think it all depends on how fast the pump flows and triggers it to shut off. I doubt the neck fits much gas.

The most I've ever been able to fill is 23.5 gallons in the stock tank. That was needle down into the E, with the light on for about 35 miles. They say you've got 5 gallons once that light comes on, so I've always figured that's 20 gallons with no light, then 5 or 5.4 with the gas light.

The 80 series is a similar setup, and my record there on fill-up was 24.25 gallons.. that time the needle was pointing to the middle stick of the "E" which is way lower than I'd comfortably go, but I was in a long line of other trucks with extra fuel so took the opportunity to test the limit a little.. :)

edit: both times involved topping off after the click

I usually put in around 21-22 gallons after seeing the light (so to speak :)). That's after driving maybe 10 miles. So I'd say the light probably comes on right around 4 gallons remaining. And remember, not all of the 25.4 may be usable. In aircraft there are always two fuel figures: tank capacity and usable fuel. The pump has to have some non-zero amount of fuel from which to suck.
