you know....as bad as you guys think you got it down there....gas is 1.39 or better and i think my dad said diesel is 1.47 per LITER, im not doing the math but 1.39x3.8 liters per US gallon...is fricken robbery considering canada has the second largest oil deposit in the world (IIRC)...

If my math is correct that comes out to $4.61 USD per gallon at your calculation. I saw regular today at $4.41 so we are not that far off. :flipoff2:

The main point is that prices are going up disproportionate to current inflation and oil companies are making record profits.

oh yea...and the whole use less gas thing....i have to drive about 100KM a day (60 miles) to get to school and back where im at...theres no busses and no trains...for some people public transit and just driving less isnt an option.

Very valid point. There are alot of people who can't simply choose to not drive.

Hear, hear!!!

I couldn't have said it better... Public transit? WHAT public transit!!!

I feel your pain, man, really I do!

PS - at the going rate the CDN $1.55 a litre I pay is equivalent to US $5.75 a gallon.

I stand corrected, forgot about the CDN vs USD. You guys win. :D

Ok, which of you guys were arguing with me that my 35-40mpg civic didnt make economical sense?

:flipoff2:

FYI, we just got back from a 5 day big sur trip and spent almost $450 in FUEL!

What pisses me off, is gas prices rising in 2 hours time. How is that possible? Don't tell me they've emptied their tanks under the ground at the station and they just were refilled? It makes me mad as hell they are raising prices based on previous stock! Gas they received 3 damn days ago!!!!!!! The gas is still the same gas! at the same price as 3 days ago! How can they do that?

I understand if they just got a new truckload in and they received their invoice or whatever.. but to change gas prices in 1 hour, 2 hours time? come awn! THATS BS! Saw it yesterday!

Oh yeah and most stations have been raising their prices almost everyday. That means they get a tanker in there every single day? Yeah right.

the official word is that the gas station makes very little money on the gas, something like 5c / gal. They say they make more money on the coffee and soda.
(don't know how true if at all)

 I wonder why Tucson is running lower, I just paid $3.749 this morning.

Some time ago, I was wondering how long it would take an imported sub-tank to pay for itself seeing the cost difference between CA and AZ and how many times I made the trip (allot). With the obvious advantages of a sub-tank "a given" + the cost diff, I was seriously considering it vs. 619toy's sweet ass ARB/W12K deal.

I'm still thinking of getting a sub tank but... I'm not sure how much longer a $300 a day limit on my card could still fill it with two tanks!

Fortunately, I have a motorcycle I can use to get to work and back. Unfortunately, helmet head looks much worse than hat head. errrrr.

edited to add: Getting back to the OP's question, No I don't think high fuel costs will impact my wheeling trips. My need to explore and do this.. wheeling thing... count for allot in my life. It's still worth the cost, ya know?! I think a better question might be: "what have you given up in order to keep wheeling?"

I am really confused. Canada has a huge amount of oil, they export a huge amount, they have reserves up the butt, yet gas is at an alltime high?

Even Mexico has not gone up like we have. I was there in December and it was 7.x pesos per liter for Premium, which was only slightly up from when I came to Az from Morelia at the end of 06.

WTF?

Mexico is one of the countries that subsidizes the fuel cost so it does not increase with the market.

Although at the present rate of increased cost for oil some coutries are considering stopping subsidizing altogether.

Indonesia is considering this as it amounts to about 3% of their GDP to subsidize gas and they cannot afford it any longer.

I never said it didn't make sense, just said it wasn't for me and I was willing to pay the extra $ to have the enjoyment of driving my Cruiser everyday. :D Of course that was $1.50 a gallon ago.:bang:

Actually Dave a busy station will get up to 5 tankers a day. An average station will get fuel once a day to every other day.

As far as Canada, I am pretty sure it is the French-Canadians that are screwing up the fuel prices. :flipoff2:

Right there with you. I am still planning a 5-6 day trip to the Sierras in July even if the gas is $5-6 by then. I am wheelin this weekend as well and will continue to as much as I can.

What have I given up to wheel????? Simple: $$$$$

Some of us don't make as much as you though:crybaby::flipoff2:

It's not BS, it's called 'Speculation'. Like in 1929.

Fact is, the real price of oil should be closer to $80-$90 a barrel. Everything above that is entirely artificial and fueled by greed.

...and you guys gave me a ration of s*** when I bought the Miata a year ago and parked the LC. Well, I just put 10.7 gallons in this morning and that had covered 310 miles, or 28.98 mpg. Read it and weep guys! :flipoff2:

Yup yup, they gave me the same ration. Nice car for a chick. Does it come in man sized? when I got the Acura.

22 average 30 highway thank you very much.

I have had 1/4 tank in the LC for almost a month!

I believe Saudi Arabia is #1 in proven reserves and Canada is #2, but from what I've read or heard, there's some questionable methods as to how the Saudi's arrived at their figures. A country that pumps the most BBL per day and the country that has the greatest reserves yields a considerable amount of power, so I could see how they would fudge those numbers.

Something that is real interesting is that if the Saudi's reserves aren't what they say they are, then they will be de-throned as a very powerful country due to their oil. Since the U.S. has very close ties to the Saudi's, what the U.S. wants and what the Saudi's says goes. They say they will sell their oil with the dollar (pegging oil-dollar), but if someone else takes over #1, this can and will most likely change. This will dramatically effect the dollar, as the euro will take its place. The dollar is already dropping and if the euro is pegged to oil, the dollar will no longer be a standard.

Some countries have already been selling their oil with the euro, i.e. Iraq. We saw what happened to them. Venezuela has also speculated selling their oil in euros, and the U.S. government has tried to overthrow Chavez more than once.

Russia I believe is the #2 exporter, if Saudi production drops below that of Russia's, I almost guarantee that Russia will demand that they receive euros for their oil. Imagine a futures contract where a BBL of oil is bought at $100 per. Well when that contract comes up, the recipient will get a depreciated dollar. That loss, although just a fraction of the dollar, maybe 0.01% comes out to a loss of 10 million dollars.

The way it works with OPEC is you get to export more oil based on how much oil you have in "proven reserves". However, they dont have the transparency that we have, so who knows how the books are cooked.

The dollar has already been ditched as the currency standard in much of the world in favor of a "basket of currencies" method which leans heavily on the Euro. Selling **** tons of debt to China and other developing countries who use it to hedge their inflation sure isnt helping the strength of the dollar, nor is a fed funds rate of 2%. Although, we should see some manufacturing jobs return to the US...just trying to see the bright side.

A very good book and not too heady book on oil is "A Thousand Barrels A Second" by Peter Tertzakian (sp?). A few years old at this point, but lots of good explanations of oil markets and how the industry operates. Plus a good overview of the geopolitical history of oil from the early 1900's through wwII.
