As i was going through the gazillion jump drives Miranda and I have to clear them off an consolidate them, I ran across this picture of my old 60...the good ole days

This was at Tellico for a MLK weekend run in 2006 (Tellico was kinda hard when covered in snow)

BTW that is the original "Cattywampus" behind my 60, before it visited the butcher...

Hi guys need some insights here. Replaced bearing s and seals in rear end about 2 yrs ago and now this. Whst would cause it to go bad so quickly?

mightve damaged the seal a little when you were the axle back in. or it wasn't seated all the way when and it finally just sort of fallen out.

On the 4Runner in your sig? Check your brake fluid, I'm going with rear wheel cylinder. My mini did the same thing a few years ago. If that is it, go with OEM, I went thru 3 parts store ones before I ordered one from Sam, fixed it right up. Pull the drum and take a look at the shoes, those are probably gonna need replacing as well if it is the cylinder.

ALSO, on those the retainer ring has to pressed into the right location. If you press it too far it won't contact the seal correctly. Although if that was the case it would have been leaking this whole time.

Good point, I will check the MC for any signs of leakage before I tear apart the drum. Too much stuff going on right now, so it may have to wait....I am hoping for a rear brake cylinder, but it smelled like gear oil.
I will look again...

Went out to look uner hood. Looks like fluid is low in mc. Akso here are 2 pics of fluid. I is generally clear but smells a bit like gear oil. The clearness and low fliud in mc lead me to suspect rear brake cylinder. Thoughts?

You're saying seals but are you sure this is not brake fluid? Make sure what you're looking at.

If above pic really is brake fluid then of course your MC is low, peddle might be a little soft too.. Don't worry about the color, it's fine.

Don't think brake fluid really has a smell, so that may be irrelevant. How does it feel? Gear oil is going to feel heavy and almost sticky, brake fluid is going to feel almost slick.

The color looks super light to be gear oil, especially if you used 80W. After 2 years I would expect oil to be darker.

After looking at the fluid in your MC a compared to the pics, I'm sticking with wheel cylinder.

Pedal may or may not be soft, depending on how bad the leak is. My pickup never felt soft, I just noticed the fluid running down the tire on the back.

If you had the shoes, a can of brake cleaner and the WC, it probably wouldn't take more than an hour or two to change out, even if you put a new hardware kit in while you were at it. The WC is the easiest part. 2 bolts and a flare nut. Those stupid little springs suck @$$...

Some of y'all that surf a lot more may have already seen this long before now, but if you haven't, this is some amazing driving - And I don't say that too often.

I was gonna ask which spotter you meant, but then I realized that the one on the ground jumping outta the way was much more likely to have something exiting the area in question vice the guy riding who definitely was puckering as you alluded to. :p

How's Washington?
So far so good. Starting to plan my trip to the Marlin Crawler Roundup. Josh's wedding had better not interfere!
