hmmmm. i wonder if this is the source of my 65 mph vibe. only happens when I let off the gas.

could one drill a new location for it. such as on the side of the frame, and run a nut and bolt to hold it on?

I really dont want to put it back on. but if thats gunna cancel my vibe out, i need to. any opinions.

(its not my tires, even those cause a HUGE vibration.... well now they do)

Vibration dampener. If I take it off will I be able to duck tape it to the wife? She needs dampening after she saw the running boards laying in the garage. Another question for you ol timers. Do you think the dampener was tested with the rb on or off. The rb probably weigh 25 lbs apiece. If the vd was put on with the rb on, the 25lbs less on that side throughs the weight off. Don't they put all the goodies on in Houston after the Japanese send the truck over like rb, moon roof etc? I'm going to take the damn thing off and run it out on the road for testing. Thanks for all your inputs.

I wouldn't be drilling through your frame just for the dampener. You'll have potential new problems if you do that.

:meh: I'll put it back on. And see if it goes away.

Not meaning to hijack. But could not having a diff drop/ bad alignment cause a vibe? It's not through the steering wheel. No pulling, nada. Smooth as silk. Just when I let off the gas. Should my drive shafts be balanced or what?

Your CV joints in good shape? Other u-joints? First place I'd look for vibration through the drive train.

You could always try to take it to the dealership and see if they will "re-balance" your truck and put the correctly weighted dampener in a good spot. :hillbilly:

It was originally designed to help prevent the notorious cruiser lean that has plagued all the older models.

Would that make it a Lean to or Lean from?

If I bolted one of these on my 40 series would it make it ride as nice as a 100?

If so, send me the ones everyone takes off.

:flipoff2:

Just got an answer from Toyota about removal of the vibration dampener on the 98 100 LC. They advised not to, of course but said it was put on there to cause less wind noise and help keep the running boards cleaner. Sounds weird to me but will still keep mine off. Case closed.

You sure you didn't hear laughter in the background as thy gave you that explanation? That's complete BS.

thats a good one. hahaha.

im sure putting another protruding object under our trucks will reduce wind noise

This is the subject of many discussions. In general the consensus is that since the LC was designed as RHD the drive train was offset slightly to the left. Here in the US we get the LHD version so the offset combined with the constant drivers weight causes the legendary Cruiser lean. I have a 40, 60 and a 100 and all of them have it.
There is a factory service bulletin that covers this for the FJ40. It describes adding a plate on the spring pack of the opposite corner from the lean.
