but FF rear are sold on many no diff locked/limited slip Cruisers. Was there ever a locking diff oprion in a 40 or any kind? I dont think so. limited slip yes I think.

John
not unless equiped with a FF rear

I am confused? your saying all cruisers with FF's have a diff lock or LS? my 45 has a FF with an open diff, as well as 1000's of 80's series.

mp i think he's saying 40's didn't come from the factory with a lsd or locker unless equipped with FF rear.

both my cruisers and all my mates cruisers are FF rear, and none are factory locked

i know that the BJ44, BJ46, *J 45 all had FF some with locking devices some without. these have the capibility to carry the one ton of payload. the 40/42 series would be hard pressed to ever see that kind of payload.
now i could be wrong about europeen or Aussi spec 40/42 series cruisers being equiped with the FF and no locking device and if i am i appologise. it was my understanding that FF 40/42 series would be equiped as suck to allow for a locker to be installed, either factory or aftermarket...
cheers

all post 7X < before 76 anyway 40 series, including the shorties came with FF rears, and barely any had locking devices or lsd's. australian policy dictated this... they were fitted FF due to anti - C clip axle laws according to my understanding...

actaully even back in the 1960's the 45LPB had a load rating of 2200lbs even with the semi floater, the stated load capicity did not go up with the addition of the FF rear end. Even the 45 short beds had a 1 ton rating, same with the 45LV all with SF.

Wayne your right, FF was required for any standard locking diff. But I recall vaguely a LS showing up in some non US cruisers back in the 60's as an option, those would have had a SF rear end.

Bad religion au has it right

It is a common misconception that Australia mandated full floaters at some point but I think the reality is that they outlawed c-clip axles. That would explain the availablility of the SF in the Hilux (no c-clips) and 100 series.

and the patrols have semi floaters as well... must have been cheaper to use the ff instead of redesign the C clip axle

the lower spec patrols which still use the leaf springs in the back have a ff rear. but if aust laws were concerned with c clips, why then did landrover not change anything, because it was landrovers that all the c clip failures i have heard of, were happening in.

I had a bearing in the rear axle of a (non-c clip of course) mini fail the other day. It had given no indiaction that it was bad (no leaking at the sel, noise from the wheel or anything else. The bearing shattered and the wheel and axle separated from the vehicle. I would have really LOVED to have had a c clip in there.

On a full floater axle a seized bearing would have messed up the spindle, which means one would have needed a new axle housing!!! Yeah, stick with c-clip semi floaters or maintain your FF axle ;)
