Having some starting trouble with FJ60 and can't tell where it's coming from. Here are the symptoms:

- Brand new battery, replaced a few months ago. New spark plugs and wires. New fuel pump, 2 years old
- It frequently has a hard time starting, volt meter on the dash is super low. But after a few pumps, and sometimes flooring it while cranking, it will turn over.
- Sometimes once it's running, the volt meter will dip really low and it will sputter and die.
- It doesn't have any problems while running and driving, like dimming/flickering lights or radio.
- When I turn it off after driving, it will sputter and diesel for a few seconds before shutting off.
- Sometimes a gassy smell, but nothing too strong.

Any thoughts? Really just wondering if it's a fuel system issue, or and electrical issue. Any insight greatly appreciated. Thanks all.

is the problem a slow cranking of the engine?
or
cranks fine but doesn't fire?

slow crank issues: battery weak, bad connections at battery, bad grounds, etc
no fire issue: bad connections at the fusible links, gas draining from carb, etc

pics of your battery?

Cranks fine, sounds like it's about to turn over but never does. I'll take some pics of the battery after work.

What do you mean gas draining from the carb?

terms are confusing, turn over does that mean fire? turn over usually means cranking

what carb is on the engine? stock Aisin carb has a sight glass on the front of it and the gas level should be in the middle of it, gas draining overnight, there would be no gas left in the sightglass

Sorry - turn over meaning fire.

Aisin carb on the engine. I'll usually pump it in the morning to get som gas in there. A fact I forgot to mention: If I start it and drive a few minutes, and then shut it off to like run an errand, and come back, it won't start.

do you have an owners manual?--there is a procedure for starting the engine. When the engine is cold, you should pump the accelerator pedal four or five time to prime the intake with gasoline. When the engine is hot, you should press the pedal once to the floor and hold it, while cranking the engine. When it catches ("turns over" as you say") you should release the pedal.

If gas is draining out of your carburetor, and depending how long it's been since you last started the vehicle, you may need to crank for a longer period of time. pressing the accelerator pedal won't do any good if your fuel bowl is empty. Cranking the engine will engage the fuel pump, to fill up the fuel bowl and then you can pump gas with the pedal to prime the intake. For a cold start, these engines need a pretty rich mixture to get going. The sight glass on the front of the carb should tell you if you have fuel in your bowl.

my fuel bowl empties after bout a week. Starting the engine one day to the next I can follow the procedure in the first paragraph. After a week, I have to crank the engine a bit before the engine will even start to run.

It must be cold this time of year in SLC, so be sure your manual choke is working and you use it for cold starts. Good luck.

Need more info.

Are you desmogged? If yes, was it done properly and what parts are still present.
If no, have you checked for vacuum leaks and inoperable parts to the emissions system?

What is your timing set to? Idle speed? Done a lean drop for tuning the carb? Fuel level in sight glass? Valves adjusted recently?

Not desmogged to my knowledge. Relatively new-to-me rig. I can check timing and idle speed . What does "lean drop for tuning carb" mean? Not sure when valves were last adjusted either. Thanks for these! Really appreciate it.
