6-72 fj40, is this line between the filter and fuel pump supposed to be a hard line? Both ends are threaded for nut and olive, but seems nuts to make a hard connection between motor and frame. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

pretty sure you have the wrong fuel filter - it should have barbs on each end so you can slip a hose and hose clap on each end. the hose then ties into the hard line from the tank and to the fuel pump.

See the attached link http://www.sor.com/cat028b.sor

Here's the 72 specific fuel line routing . it looks like you need hose 23100A with the fitted ends. the 6903 - 7209 is the applicable dates so your build date of 6-72 fall here

Krush -FWIW - In your initial photo, you can see the threaded outlet on the fuel filter. But I don't see where a threaded inlet line would connect to the fuel pump. Maybe I'm missing something in the photo?

I removed the threaded end on the fuel pump to check on getting a hose made at my local hose shop. The hose shop sId they couldn't make it. Beno just told me its discontinued so guess I will check with Sor

Should SOR not work out, here is a possibility. If the inlet connector into the fuel pump is the same as the outlet connector, just get a foot or so of 5/16" bundy tube (hard fuel line), some olives & nuts from Toyota, and bend your own.....just a thought.

( Note, if you make your own line, be sure to put a nice "S" bend or a loop in it so it has room to flex. )

FWIW, my Jan 73 FJ 40 has hose barbs on both ends of the fuel filter, and a hose barb fitting threaded into the inlet to the fule pump. This was (is) the stock arrangement. A regular piece of 5/16" ID fuel line with regular hose clamps connects the filter to the pump.

I would not recommend using a metal line between the fuel filter and the fuel pump. The filter is mounted to the frame, the pump is mounted to the engine. Normal shaking and torsion allowed by flexure of the motor mounts would eventually lead to a fatigue failure of a metal line bridging from the frame to the engine.

Disregard what I said in post #12. A sort piece of 5/16" hard line doesn't flex much, even being coiled.......I should stick to my day job!

Make it easy on yourself. Get the later fuel filter with two barbs then use the 5/16" flex fuel line and two breeze clamps to connect between the pump and the filter. That's the way the later (7203 and up) set-ups are arranged.

Anyone know if the fuel pump inlet size is the same across different model years? I'm thinking about just swapping to a barbed fitting out of the fuel pump and using a barb to barb filter

If you don't mind installing a non OEM fuel filter, try this: Available at Advance Auto--glass filter-same filtering mesh as orig, but you can see when the filter is starting to get plugged(rather than waiting for the engine to die of fuel starvation)--It costs less than OEM and comes with a spare filter element
