The fuel gauge on my blue and white 55 has not worked since I purchased it 2 years ago. I tried tracking down the problem a couple of times without any luck.
I gave it another shot and looked at the wiring diagram again. Yellow wire with red stripe goes all the way to the gauge. No trouble finding the wire at the sending unit, looked at the wire going into the harness. I cut away some of the tape that was there and found that the yellow and red wire was plugged into a red and blue wire connector.
Looked around and found the yellow and red connector that was not being used. Plugged it in and the gauge now works.
I guess we should all know by now that work previously done on many 55's may not have been done correctly. I assumed the wire going into the harness was correct because the harness was wrapped very professionally with black tape. I'll try not to make that assumption again.
It's good the have a fuel gauge again.
