After a complete rebuild of my 1fzfe, (93 Fzj80), I fired it up and discovered a leak on the output side of the fuel filter. Ive replaced the metal washers, and still leaks. I made double sure the washers are installed correctly, one on each side of the fuel line, but still leaks like crazy. I pulled the metal fuel line that runs from the filter to the fuel rail, (a real PITA to install, fyi), just to see if it was damaged. Both mating surfaces of the filter and the fuel line seem fine. What am I missing? It's an OEM filter, btw. Im going to replace the filter, hoping that is what it is, but has anyone ever experienced something similar? After completely pullling the motor, tearing down, and rebuilding, I've had about all of this vehicle I want.

This is crazy, but i was seriously about to post the same question, as i'm in exactly the same situation. leaking at the banjo bolts on output side of fuel filter and where it connects to fuel rail. took both ends off, made sure both washers were in place, fired it up, and still gushing gasoline. my truck did start this time around, but i turned it off since the gasoline was gushing.

hopefully someone can help!

I'm glad I'm not to know I'm not going crazy. As far as an O ring, I'm sure there is, but there has got to be a logical explanation. I put the old filter back on and it still leaks. I am concerned it may be the hard fuel line, but it looks fine, no damage that I can see.

Did you get this sorted? I finally gave up and had mine towed to the shop, to find that the answer on mine was to replace the banjo bolt altogether (and make sure both washers were on). Mine had apparently had a little wear. Once the new banjo bolt was on, the leak stopped. Hate that I had to tow it to the shop, but they did some other troubleshooting for me as well.

Hopefully you got this figured out as well!!

Thanks for reminding me to update this post! I did get it fixed. I took the fuel line off the fuel rail, installed it to the filter off the vehicle, so I could properly torque the banjo bolt. then I fished the fuel line back up thru the intake, and after a lot of cursing, got the top banjo bolt and two washers threaded. then I laid under the vehicle and got the two mounting bolts installed. Not sure why it was leaking the first few tries, but I think maybe I wasnt torquing the rear banjo bolt enough. (really not enough room to get a torque wrench in there.) Probably not the easiest way to do it, but it don't leak. Even after reusing the crush washers.

resurrection!

I've been smelling gas the last few weeks and never saw any wetness the whole time. I was thinking it was my charcoal canister the entire time... Yikes!!! Finally noticed that I had a drip every few seconds coming from the inlet side. I tried to tighten things down but it didn't help. I ordered a new one today. The filter was either a purolator or a Wix. only about 20,00 miles on this one. The one I reordered was a Wix. Toyota wanted $60.

they are a pia, and have to be snugged down to work, I like to use the softer copper washers than some of the silver washers that sometimes come with the filters, to me the copper ones squish easier and seal better. But I usually have to test the filters and then add a 1/4 turn to seat them after they leak. Just happened on an fj62 I was working on.

New wix filter installed in about 20 minutes. No leaks and all is good!

Wait so I am having this issue now, and glad I am not the only one. My bolt (new) is on tight with new washers and filter. Do I need to make it tighter because it won’t turn anymore?

Something wasn't put together correctly or one or more of the parts are defective. I would not tighten it more until you've inspected the assembly closely.

Are you using a copper plate on either side of the pipes/banjo bolts? Should be two each side of the filter/pipe union, four copper plates total.

Did you check to see if the copper plates/washers are still present?

One of the mating surfaces may not be perfectly flat, or something (dirt/gravel) may have fallen in between say the copper plate and the pipe or the filter, or maybe more likely, a copper plate fell out and you didn't notice, or the pipe is tweaked, or the bolt is cross threaded, or the threads on the filter are messed up, ---- There are just a few possible errors in such a simple assembly.

First thing maybe is check to see if there are two copper plates on either end of the filter/pipe union. Try taking close up flash photos of the unions,
magnify, look for the copper plates.

Post up the photos so we can help.

Are you using OEM parts?

Yeah all new oem, with silver washers. Looking online now for copper. Al see o ordered all new parts just incase even new hard line. Will fiddle around More in a moment and get some picks. It like yours leaked from the outlet to the hardline going to fuel rail .
