Yesterday, I got caught in North Van, idling and barely moving for nearly an hour, then more of the same on the way back to the Fraser Valley. Traffic was horrendous, stop and go the whole time. I still got 7.77 km / l (12.86 l / 100K) which is really excellent considering the conditions. That's GPS adjusted and filled up using the same pump at the same station that I almost always use. Pretty impressive fuel economy for something the size of an HDJ81. On my 255-85-16's the odo adjustment to GPS is +9.21%, FYI.

If we're doing a fuel economy thread, then I'll add my 2 cdn cents...

My BJ74, weighing in at 6700lbs (3040kg) for the road trip portion of ACT 2006 averaged 12.8L/100 or so over 7000kms (4400miles).

Just returned from a 675 km round trip to Kelowna and back via Coquihalla - 12.79 l / 100 km.

Just made a trip to Kamloops this weekend.
Fuel economy was about 10.74 liters per 100km

This was straight highway.
I noticed it got a little better.
It used to be at around 12.25liters per 100km.

Its possible that you just need to give your 1HD-T a good work out.
I bet there is a lot of carbon built up inside from Japanese driving.

Cheers,
Nick

This is a great number Nick .. I only get those numbers when my 2H very fresh rebuild and stock HJ-60

Nick, any idea how I go about blowing out the carbon? I've driven this thing about 6,000 km now under local conditions. Is there something else I can do?

Work it. It needs to be worked.
Carbon needs heat to come out.

I also ALWAYS run an injector cleaner/lube.
I am using some stuff right now from Stanadyne.
Costs about $30 and treats about 950 liters.
It claims to improve power and mpg.
No comment on the power (seems about the same).
But the numbers do indicate better millage.

Also Martin, get a pyro.
I am amazed at how long it can take to idle down sometimes.

Cheers,
Nick

This could change.
There was probably 300 kms of 90 zone.
Which meant I was going just under 100kph.
The other 300 kms I was going about 105pkh.
I also went over one mountain pass.

I should mention, this is the first road trip with my boost and pyro.
I noticed that at about 95kph my boost is about 5 or 6 psi.
And at about 105kph my boost is abour 9 or 10 psi.

I guess this means that to go an extra 10kph I have to put that much more fuel in, which results in more exhaust and higher turbo pressure. So 95kph is probably the sweet spot on the highway.

Cheers,
Nick

Are these improved numbers coming up "after" the turbo rebuild?

Yes these numbers are after the turbo rebuild.
But the last time I worked it out was when I just got the truck.

When I got the truck I was told it would run a little better and get a little better millage after about 10,000K. I was told it had to do with being worked better in north america, and working the carbon out.
I.E: No 10 hours of straigh highway in Japan.

I am assuming the better millage was because I the truck was run in now and any carbon was burnt out.
I am also using the Stanadyne fuel conditioner (which should help a little).

Cheers,
Nick

and did you catch the number in your Pyro at this moment .. ?

On the flats on the highway it is usually around 600'F pre turbo.
95kph to 105kph it does not really change.

this number is fantastic .. ! you can pump a lots more diesel inside :D

I could, put pulling in hills I don't want it to overfuel and burn to hot.
Right now in most big hills I see about 950, but I have seen 1100 once.

I'd leave the fuel alone if I were you Nick. Your numbers aren't far different from mine.
I need to replace the injectors on my truck though, I think two years of Central American diesel has taken it's toll on the injectors and the fuel economy and exhaust is showing it (I think they are drippy since I get noticable black smoke when the truck works hard). You'll need to let me know who your diesel guy is when I get up there in a few weeks. I'll have my old set of injectors to get rebuilt.

I keep it very simple .. many times I need under heavy load some black smoke behind my cruiser .. no worries really coz I know I have a lots more diesel than my chamber can burn ..

In dose situation that I seen smoke .. I know I are rising my EGT so I seen in my pyro. I downshift and reduce the amount of diesel .. problem solved ..

But I always know I got the diesel there for my use .. :D

P.D. I need a turbo !!!!
