Fuel and Temp gauges intermittent

I noticed something about my fuel/temp gauge dilemma and hope it may point to the culprit. My fuel gauge was reading empty today when I started her up this morning, but I assumed the gauge was just having one of it's tantrums so I headed to work (I have an auxiliary fuel tank so I wasn't worried about actually running out of fuel). As the engine warmed up I noticed that my temp gauge rose slowly to the first mark and stayed there....just like it should do. The fuel gauge never moved....it remained buried to the left of E. The temp gauge never fluctuated other than slightly rising when I'd climb a hill and dropping back to the first mark when the road leveled out....I didn't notice the usual "acts like it loses power" fluctuations that were the reason I started this thread.

About 30 miles into my commute there is a decent hill and as I started to climb it I felt that familiar "running out of fuel" feeling so I switched over to the auxiliary tank and the fuel gauge immediately started to rise and leveled out at 3/4 tank (which is as high as that auxiliary tank ever shows when completely full). As I continued the last 10 miles I didn't notice the temp or fuel gauge "lose power" and bounce back like normally happens at random.

So here's my question/thought. Could the sending unit on the main tank be causing the intermittent issue of "power loss" to the fuel and temp gauges? It turns out that the primary tank was pretty low on fuel (only made it 30 miles) so the gauge was correct when showing completely empty. I've never driven much distance with the gauge on E so I've never seen how it would affect my temp/fuel gauge issue. Maybe this morning my temp gauge was just feeling great and didn't fluctuate because I was lucky.

Just thought I'd ask the experts here to see if maybe I can just replace that old stock sending unit and fix all my temp/fuel gauge fluctuation problem. $63 for a new sending unit is a small price to pay to fix that problem.
