When cutting the hole in the tank for the sending unit I assume it would be a good idea to keep as many filings out of the tank as possible. My plan is to hook my shop vac exhaust up to the large filler inlet to preasurize the tank and block off all other inlet/outlets.
Definately keep as much out of there as possible. I flushed the tank several times with full hose pressure which expelled most of the metal bits. It also moved the rest of them that didn't flush out down to the outlet where I was able to stick a magnet down through my new sending unit hole and pick up the rest. Just in case any are left I have a fuel filter between the tank and the transfer pump.
According to my research, the JB Weld should be a permanant solution. Much easier than welding.
